turn for his afliftance made over to the eledoral-houfe a confiderable part
of the patrimonial eflates. From the years 1468 to 1608 the counts of
Hartenburg made no further pretenfions to the Landgrave Heje's fuccefllon;
but in the lafl: year renewed them. From 1618 to 1627 ^ procefs was
carried on with great vehemence by both houfes j and in 1705 it broke out
anew with the fame animofity.
The Weßerburg houfe, which, in the manner above-mentioned had .fucceeded
to the name and eftateof the old Leiningc7i line is defcended from
the houfe of Ru7jkel, for Sigfrid, lord oi Rimkel in the year 1226 made
a convention betwixt his two fons, who were the founders of the Weße}--
btirg And Rimkel lines; but a perpetual variance prevailing amono- them,
whilflthey held the eftate in common, in the year 1288 they came to a partition,
by which the old line obtained Weßei-burg and Sch^deck, and Rtcukel
became the portion of the younger. In the year 1290 the former acquired
by marriage the lordfliip of Schaucnbiirg on the Lahi, and a part alfo of
Kleebcrg and Huttenberg; and in the year 1467, Reinhard II. oi JVt-ßerbiit g,
by his fpoufe Margaret^ arrived to the poffeffion of the lordfliips of the ancient
houfe oi Leiningen., at that time but jufl: become extindl. His fons
Pi.ilip George and Reinhard IV. agreed on a divifion of the eftates ; Lciningen
to fall to the ihare of the eldeft; the fecond to have Schauenburrr and
Kleeberg; and Weßerburg and Schadeck to defcend to the youngeft. In the
year 1557 they alfo entered into an aft of fucceffion, by which the daughters
were excluded. The two firfl lines failing, their poffeflions efcheated to
the laft, which ever fince the year 1694 is again become divided into two
lines, namely, the Chriflopher line founded by Chrißopher Chrißian, fon to
Count George William., and the George line which began in George. The
refidence of the former of thefe is at Grunjladt, and that of the latter at
Weßerburg ; though thefe places being held in common, both lines have
their refpective houfes at them.
§. 2. The tide of this houfe is Count of Lelningen., Lord of Wefterbur 'r,
Grunßadt.,'Upper-Brunn and Forbach., and Baron of the Sacred Roman Empire.
The arms oi Leiningen are faphire, three eagles pearl, and the creft a lindcntree
; thofe of Weßerburg, ruby, a crofs topaz fifnee with crofslets, and the
creft a red-wing.
§. 3. This houfe votes at the general Diet among the Wetterau counts of
the Empire, and likewife in the Diet of the Circle of the Upper Rhine. Its
affefTment in the tnatricula of the Empire is two horfe and four footmen, or
forty florins per month ; but in another place I find it only thirty-fix florins
twenty-fix kruitzers. To the chamber of Wetzlar it pays forty rix-dollars
thirty-four kruitzers and three fourths.
§. 4. Its poffeflions are,
