Frankfort.] GERM A N T. i^: celebrated alio for its Gommerce, lies in a delightful, healtht, ajid fertile country along the Mayn, by which it is divided into two parts, namely, into Frankfort and Sachjenhaufen. The former of thefe being the largeftis lubdivided into twelve wards, and the fecond into two. Botli are reckoned to contain about 3000 houfes large and imall, and not a few of them modern. Some of them too are rather ftately palaces, as the Co!??poßel ^nd Fro}ihüJ\ the 'Trieijhof, the Culknhof, the German houfe, an augu(t edihce fituate near the bridge over the Maym, the Hcffi-Darnijhuithof, the palace of the Prince de la Tours, and the hotels of the counts of Solms Schauenbunt and Schonborn. The three principal fquares in it are the Romerberg, the Lieben Fraiienberg, and the Rofzmarkt, or horfe-market. On the firll of thefe flands the town-houfe, or Romer as it is called, being an old fafhioned edifice, the back front excepted, which is modern. The fore-part of it ia fupported by arches, under which in the fair time are toy(hops of all kinds. Over thefe arches is a hall where the Emperor ufually dines after his coronation, and into which opens the chamber where the eledtion of a new Emperor is canvafled. In the back part are the city offices, and the diet-chamber of the Circle of the Uppef-Rhine, as likewiie that of the didature of the Circle. Among the archives of the town-houfe ig kept the cchhnttdt Golden Bull of the Emperor Charles IV. which is a parchment book of forty-three quarto leaves, containing the fundamental inftitutes of the Empire, written in Latin capitals ; which famous piece is kept in a calTcet of gold. On the Liebfraiienberg Hands the houfe of Frauenftein or Braimfels, in which the Emperors formerly lodged, and all the houfes from Liebfrauenberg to Romerberg were included in the Emperor's quarter. In the fame place is alfo the change. The horfe-market is laid out in walks and rows of trees. On the hay-market is the main-guard, which is a handfome building, and over againif it the riding academy. In the town are three arfenals, the principal of which (lands at the end of the Zeil facing the Jetos ftreet. The magiftrates and city officers profefs Lutheranijm, that being the eftablilhed religion, but mod of the churches, and thofe too the chief, are in the hatids of the Catholics. The Proteftants are alfo very numerous here. The Catholic foundations and convents are fubjedl to the archbifliopric o? Me?itz. In the cathedral of St. Bartholojuew is a fmall chapel where the Emperor is elefted. The churches of St. Leonard ^nA our Lady are both collegiate. There is alfo here a convent with a church of the order oi^t.John, together with another of Carmelites, Domijiicans, and Capuchins, and two catholic chapels. The Lutheran churches and convents here are the church of the difcalceated, \\h\ch. is the great church; that of St. Catherine, where in 1522 the firlt Lutheran fermon was preached, and to which is annexed a nunnery of ladies of noble birth ; the church of the tohite women here, is fo called from the convent belonging to it, Vol. V.
