6. The bailiwick of Melsungen lies on both fides the river FidJa, and
contains the other half of the Ricdßrßcs, having little corn-land ; but near
Erlesberg are fome coal-mines which are worked.
Mdfungai or Mcißngen, a feat of the Prince's, having a fmall town, which
in 1 195 and I3^'3 was cruelly deflroyed. Near it is a bridge over the Fuii/a,
lying in a road much frequented. The noble families of No-rdcck, Py^ormsy
and Korff'hzve their feats here.
Brciter.au, once a convent of Benedi&ines, ftands on the river Fulda, with,
fome vine-grounds near it. Above Bratenaii this river takes two remarkable
circuits among the mountains ; and one (hort half mile below is joined by
the Eder.
The bailiwick of Fridewald borders in the principality o? Hersfeld y
its villages are but few, but in it is a very profitable wood, which forms a
part of Sidliiiger foreft. In it alfo are quarries of Hone, and it abounds in
fifli. In this amt or bailiwick lies Dreyen-hill.
The fe:\.t of Fridcu-a/d was purchafed in the year 1422 of three noble
families, namely, of the Mtlnrod, Reckcnrod and Altenberg, by the Landgrave
Henry III. who rebuilt it for a hunting feat. In the year 1551, an
alliance was concluded here betwixt France, Saxony, Brandenburg and
Heffe. Near the feat ftands a town.
The bailiwick of Haringen, belonging to this prefedurefbip, lies on
the river

8. The bailiwick of Hauneck is environed on all fides by the territories
of Fulda and lies on the river Haun. In it is the Stoppelß.nll noted for

its height and roundnefs, but flill more for its excellent quarries; and on it
(lands the ruined caftle of Hauneck.
