year 1171, it was made a priory, and, in 1418, an abbey. In the year
1575, the Emperor Maximilia?! 11. granted it an immunity from foreign
courts, which the Emperor Lt'^/'ö/rt' confirmed in 1659, with the refervation
of fome particular cafes. The abbot is flyled, Aloft noble lord-prelate of
the holy Roma'n Empire and lord of the Imperial foundation and abbey of
Marchthal. The affeflment of the abbey in the 7natricida of the Empire
was formerly forty-four florins, but at prefent it amounts to no more than
thirty-two. Its taxation to the chamber of Wetzlar is eighty-one ruthlers
fourteen kruitzers and a half. The criminal jurifdidlion over the village
near the convent of Marchthal, is an Imperial fief. To the jurifdiclion of
the abbey alfo belong the villages of
DathaiiJ'en, Dieterskirch, Haufen, Kirchbirlingen, ReutUiigen, Sangart,
Seekirch^ Under-Wackingcmndi Utfenweiler, with feveral hamlets and manors.

Jium, lies diredly oppofite to the city of Cojlanz. This abbey was founded
about the year 980, and belongs to the cathedral of Coßanz. The title of
its abbot is, Moft noble lord-prelate of the holy Roman Empire and lord
of the two Imperial foundations and abbeys of St. Gregory of Peterjhaufen
and SS. Cyril and George at Stein on the Rhine, prior of Klingenzell, lord
of the abbey at St. Marys Gate in Mengen, and alfo lord of the lordHiips
of Stauffen, Hilzingen, Rietheim, &c. In the Diet of the Empire he has
a feat and vote on the bench of the Sivabian prelates betwixt the abbots
of Trfee and Urfperg ; but in that of the circle of Sivabia between the abbot
of Marchthal and the prior of IVetienhaufen. His afleffment to the
Imperial niatricula amounts at prefent to twenty florins, and his contingency
to the chamber at Wetzlar is forty ruthlers fifty-four kruitzers. This abbey
is under the protedion of Aiifiria. A confiderable part of its eftates lies in
foreign lands, but, exclufive of thefe, in the year 1581, the city of Cöftanz
purchafed the jurifdidion over the village or fuburb of Peterß:aujen for
3000 florins; and, in the years 1641 and 1682, the abbey loll feveral
eftates and lands by the fortifications added to the city of Cojlanz. Indeed,
the convent in the free-town of Stein, under the jurifdidion of
Zurich, was, in the year 1597, united by the Pope with the abbey of
Peterßoaufen ; but this convent has lately been fupprefled. Klingenzell lies
in the Turgau, being fubiedt to the jurifdidion of the Sivißs.
