The Stein wine, which is produced about Wurzburg, on the mountain
there called the Stein, is the bed: of the Franconian wines.
Without the town we find on the river Mayn a monaftcry and a
nunnery.
2. The upper prefedlurate of Hevdingsfeld, in which is
Heydijigsfeld, a fmall town feated on the Mayn, and formerly inherited
by R. Frederick I. of Frederick, the laft Count of Rothenburg, but brought
by bifhop Otto II. in the year 1342 to the billiopric of Wurzburg. This
prefefturate has a confiderable growth of wine :
Together with fix other places.
3. The cent-amt, or hundred of Feits-Hochheim, in which is
Veits-Hocheim, a village feated about one hour's diftance below Würzburg,
and in which Henry the Landgrave of T'huringia was eledted in 1 246 to
be German King. This village is noted for being the birth-place of St. Bil~
hid, who is worfhipped there.
The places of Erlabrunn, Gunderßeben, Margets-Hochheim, Upper and
Under-Leinach, Tungerßoeim and Zellingen.
4. The upper prefedlurate and cent-amt of Karlstadt, in which is
Karlßadt, a town lying on the Mayn, and containing in it three hundred.
and thirty-four taxable houfes. This place is the feat of two land-deannet,
namely, of the upper and lower. In the fixteenth century almofl: all its inhabitants
were Proteftant.
Karlburg, a parochial-village fituated on the other fide of the Mayn, oppofite
to the former ; and in the parifli-church of which was eredled a brotherhood
of the Holy-Crofs in the year 1666. The ancient cafile of Karlburg
here lies in ruins.
The villages of Lautenbach and Retzhach, near which are pilgrimagechurches,
and at the latter alfo grows Mufcatell wine ; Muhlbach, having a
good growth of wine ; Himmclßadt, and feven other places.
5. The prefedlurate of Homberg on the Weren, in which is a cafile
and borough of that name,
together with eight other places,
6. The upper-prefetturate and cent-amt, or hundred of Rothenfels,
in which is
Rothenfels, a fmall town feated on the Mayn, but containing in it only
fixty-feven taxable houfes. Bifhop Otto II. purchafed this place to the bifliopric
in the year 1342. It was for a long time given in fief to the Counts
of Rieneck, but after their demife reverted to the bifliopric. The caftle
here was laid wafi:e by the peafants in the year 1 525.
The villages ofCarbach and Greufenheim, together with twelve other places.
7. The prefedurate of Schonrain, which reverted to the bifliopric in
1 559 after the extindtion of the Counts of Rieneck. In this prefedurate is
Schonrain, a citadel and village. £3"
