'^ht Benedisline abbey o^ Ochfenhmifen lies between the Imperial towns of
Manmingcn and Biberacb, being founded in the year iioo as a priory dependent
on the abbey of St. hlafim in the Scharzwald ; but, in the year
1 39 1, it was raifed to an abbey and declared abfolutely free and independent
of that of St. Blafna. Its privileges were gradually augmented : by
the Einperov JVenceJIaus in the year 1397, by the Emperor Sigijmwid in
the year 1434, and by the Emperor Frederick III. in the year 1452, it
was exempted from all fummons and procefs in a provincial court. In the
year i ^48, the Emperor Ferdinaiid I. took it into his particular protedlion
and that of the houfe of Außria, under which it ftill remains. This
abbey pays annually fix florins as proteftion-money to the procurator of
Aitorf, and for Ummendcrf ten more. In the year 1706, the Emperor
Jofeph conferred on the abbot the criminal jurifdidion throughout all the
villao-es and lands belonging to the abbey. The abbot's title is, Aloft noble
prelate and lord of the moft holy Roman Empire, lord fovereign abbot of the
immediate free Imperial abbey of Ochfenhaufen, lord of the free Imperial
lordfhips of Thanheimb, Umendorf, Upper and U7ider-Sulmcnti?igen, as alfo of
Horn and Fifchbach. In the Diet of the Empire he fits and votes betwixt
the Sivabian prelates of Weingarten and Trfee, but in that of the circle of
Sivabia he fits on the bench of prelates betwixt Weingarten and Elchiiigen.
His affefihient in the ?natricula of the Empire and circle is one hundred
florins, and to the chamber at Wetzlar he pays one hundred and thirty-nine
ruthlers, fixty-nine kruitzers. From the manor-courts of the abbey an appeal
lies to the regency, which confifts of an ordinary-council compofed of
laics, ecclefiaftics and other oflicers.
Near the convent of Ocbfenhaufen lies a market-town of the fame name
on the river Rottam, containing one pariQi-church.
The manors in the territories of the abbey are thofe of Umendorf, Horn
and Fifchbach, together with Thanheimb and Upper and Under-Suhnentingen.
To it belong alfo the pariflies of Steinhaufen, Simmerti?igen, Thanheimb,
Umendorf Reinßetten, Belhnont, Ringfchnaidt, Mittelbuch, Rottiimb, having
all regulars and capitulars ; Laupheim, Winterrieden, Kirchdorf Opfingen,
Baldringen, Schonebiirg, Under-Sinonertingen, Horn and Fifchbach, which
are
fubjedl to fecular clergy.
The lordfhip of Wain, formerly belonging to this abbey, is now a dependency
of the Imperial city of Ulm,
