III. The upper Marggravate of Durlach, as it is called, produces the
beft wine in this country, which is therefore diftinguiOied by the name of

Marggravate-'wine, and properly confifts of the three following lordfhips, viz.
I. The lordlhip of Röteln, formerly having lords of its own who hore
the title thereof; and on the extinäion of thele it eibhe.ited to the Mirc^graves
of Hochberg. In conjundion with the lordfihip of Saulenbcr'r it makes
one government, and conlifts of thirteen -vogteys, or bailiwicks, viz.
1. The bailiwick of Tbimbringen, oh a hill, in whicli is the ruinated
caflle oi Röteln, and at the foot of it lies the village o^Thumbrinnren.
2. The bailiwick of Z/Orr^f/i, containing
Lörrach, a little town, in which is a fpecial fuperintendency and a granimar-fchool.
Crenzach, a parochial village lying above Bafil near the Rhine.
3. The bailiwick oi Riminken.
4. The bailiwicks and pariilies of Wollbach and Weil.
5. The bailiwick of Haltingen, in which is
Haltifjgen,
a parochial village.
Fridlingen, a caftle feated on tht Rhine, near which in 1702 a (harp encounter
happened betwixt the hnperialißs and the French.
6. The bailiwick and pariüi of Eymeldingen.
y. The bailiwick of Kirchen and Reidbach.
8. The bailiwick of Schöpfen, in which is Schopßjeim, or Schöpfen, a
fmall town feated on the river of Wifen, and containing a fpecial fuperintendency.
9. The bailiwicks and parifhes of Weitenau, Stein and Tegernau.
2. The landgravate of Saufenberg, which, as before obferved. in conjundion
with the lordfhip of Röteln makes one government, and conlifts
of eight bailiwicks; but the caftle ofthat name is dcmolilhed. The
bailiwicks in it are,
1 The bailiwick and parifli of T'annenkirch.
2. The bailiwick of 5A7;2//;7g-£';z ; to which belongs
Candern,
a market-town, containing iron-works.
3. The bailiwick of Upper-Eckenheim, in which are the parochial villagesof
Upper and hoiner-Eckenheim.
4. The bailiwick of Welmlingen.
5. The bailiwick and parities o{ Holzen, Feldberg and Vcgclbach.
6. The bailiwick and parifh of y^Zi-^^g-m.
7. The famous inn of Kalte Herberg.
3. The lordfliip of Badewweiler, formerly belonging to the counts of
but transferred by Count 'John in the year 1 444 to the Marggrave
Freyburg,
Rudolph of Hcchberg. This lordfhip forms a diftind; government, to which
belong nine bailiwicks,
