I fliall once more mention the bailiwicks fituate on this fide of the Rhine,
among the territories of the Empire, and which are flill fubjedl to the jurifdidlion
thereof, and, at the fiime time fomewhat improve and complete
the account given thereof, Vol. ii. p. 598. Thefe lie in Suahia, and, indeed,

§. i.'T^HE bifliopric of Bafel lies between the Sundgau, the princely

county of Mompelgard, the county of Burgundy, the principality
oi Neußchatel, and the Sxaifs Cantons of Bern^ Solothurn and Bafel, and
conftitutes a confiderable bifhopric.
§. 2. The inhabitants of this bilhopric fpeak partly French, and partly
what is called the Patois. They are likewife partly catholic and partly
Proteftant. The States here confift of the fpiritualty, the nobility, and the
towns and baiUwicks. Their prefident is the 2hhot oi Bellelay for the time
being. When a tax of 30,000 pfennings of Bafel currency is impofed, the
fpiritualty pays thereto 2675, and the nobility 5385 but the reft of it
the towns and amts fupply.
§. 3. Its bifhopric is founded in the city oi Bafel, and, as isfuppofed, was
tranflated thither from ^z/^// ; but the true time of its foundation is uncertain,
and before the middle of the eighth century we have little to be depended
upon relating to it. Its bifhop is a Prince of the Empire, and has a
