of the upper palatinate lies at Amberg. The prefidents of thefe prefeflurate-courts
are all noblemen.
§. 15. The revenues of the Eledtor arife out of fait, beer, wine and
brandy, oak-maft, venifon, wood, mines, coinage, tolls, excife, contributions,
and other ordinary lources, exclufive of impofts on extraordinary occafions.
His ordinary revenues per annum are eflimated at betwixt five and
fix millions of guldens.
§. 16. The military force of the Eledor confifts of regulars and militia-;
the former of thefe in times of peace amounts ufually to about 12,000
men, but in war have been augmented to 25, and even to 30,000. In
the year 1753 colonel Beccof ioxn-\tA a fcheme for enabling the Eleöor to
maintain 12,000 regulars and ] 0,000 militia for 860,000 Imperial guilders
fe7- annion ; whereas on the former footing fuch a body required at leali
the fum of three millions.
§. 17. To the eledlorate belongs

Which is under the direflion of two rent-amters, or governments.
I. To the rent-amt of Munich belongs
Munich, in Latin Monachium, a fortified city feated on the IJer, and the
capital and refidence of the Eledlor. The flraight and broad Itreets of this
place, and the great number of fine buildings in it both ecclefiaftical and
fecular, render it one of the handfomeft cities in all Gertiiany, and even in
Europe; and it is faid to contain 40,000 inhabitants. The palace here, which
was firft eredted by the Eleftor Maximilian I. is an elegant ftruöure, containing
four courts, 1.72;. the Prinzenhof, which is decorated with feveral
brafs ftatues ; the KaiJerhoJ, the Kuchelhof, which is the largeft, and the
uilte Burg, or old citadel. The things mofl worthy of notice in this palace
are, the large and beautiful Kaijerfaal, a chapel of the Virgin Mary,
with a rich treafury in it; the Antiquarium, or chamber of antiquities,
in which are two hundred marble ftatues and bufts of Rojnan Emperors,
and fome hundreds of other antiques, the greateft part of which were
brought from Italy; the chamber of rich curiofities; the Mufaiim-, and
the Eledor's library. In the year 1729 the palace, and particularly the
chamber of rich curiofities here fuffered greatly by a fire, and in 1750 a
whole wing of it was burnt down. Towards the eaft ftands the Eleitor's
arfenal, and northward lie the park and pleafure-gardens, and near thefe
is the Thurnierhaus, or large edifice for tournaments. On the weft-fide of
the palace and oppofite to it, ftands the fine houfe belonging to Count
Preyjing. In this part is alfo another palace built by Duke William. In the
