§. 5. The Eleflor of Saxony has, indeed, as well on account of the
marggravate as theburggravate oi Meißen, fued for two feparate feats and
voices at the council of the Princes of the Empire, but has hitherto been
refufed.
§. 6. The marggravate, as far as it belongs to the eledloral houfe of
Saxony, comprizes in it the circle of Meißen, together with that of Leipzig,
and the foundation of JVurzen, as alfo the circle of Erzgebirg, the circle
of the Vogtland, and that of Neuftadt, to which moreover are to be added
the foundations of Merjeburg and Naumburg-Zeitz. Next follows the more
accurate defcription of it.
MEISSEN.
The C I R c L E of
This circle terminates on that of the eledlorate, Lufatia and Bohemia,
and alfo on the circles of the Erzgebirg and Leipzig, comprizing in it
likewife what formerly conftituted the foundation of Meißen. A pare of it
is very beautifully exhibited in Zurner's charts of the dioceie and prefedturate
of Drefderi, as alfo of the diocefe of Grojfenhayn. Peter Schenk has engraved
both thefe chars, and Matthew Seutter likewife has copied the firü. The
circle contains in it forty boroughs, four market-towns, 1393 (or accordding
to Hewpel's tables only 1049) villages, two hundred and eighty-three
immediate vaflals, one hundred and eighty-nine mediate ones, and twenty
fovereign palaces. To it belong the following prefedlurates : viz.
I. The four Meifznian prefedturates. In the town of Meißen were formerly
feveral jurifdidions ; namely, that of the Marggrave, who was poffeffed
of the center of the citadel ; that of the Bifhop, v;ho was proprietor
of the hindmofl: part; that of the Burggrave, who poflefTed the fore part
and that of the Provoft of St. Ajra.
Out of thefe jurifdidions arofe what
are called the four prefedturates of Meißen, each of which has not a peculiar
extent of country fubjed to its office, but only certain villages which lie
Scattered up and down. Thefe prefedurates are,
I. The hereditary or circle-prefedurate of Meissen, containing in it
fifty-five immediate and twenty-five mediate valTals, with three hundred
and twenty-four villages. In it is
Meißen, in Latin Mifena, a town, feated on the Elbe and the rivulets
of Triebifch and Meife, which pour themfelves into it, from the lafl of
which alio it takes its name. It ftands partly on mountains, partly in the
valley, and belongs to the greater feledion of the towns, being under immediate
vaflalage, and likewife the feat of the four Mifnian prefedurates,
as alfo of a fuperintendency, under whofe fpiritual jurifdidion ftand two
towns.
