I. The bailiwick of Grebenstein, reaching to the Fulda; and being
a good corn-country.
Grebenßein, a fmall town feated on a high eminence on the Ejje, near it
formerly ftood a caftle, of which a houfe ftill remains. On the bridge here
is held in the open air the Bruckengericht, or bridge-court, which is not lefs
fingular for its cuftoms than place of holding it, every defendant being
obliged to depofite a fine, which on his acquittal is returned him, and the
plaintiff condemned in double the fum.
Immenhaufen, a fmall town on the fkirts of Rheinhards foreft, was deflroyed
by fire in the years 1385, 1603 and 1631. The firft Proteftant
fermon preached here was with the approbation of the Landgrave Philip
the Magnanijnous. The family of Stcckhaujen have two manfion-houks in
this
place.
Not far from hence is an iron mine, for the improvement of which fome
iron-works have been erected on the river at VeckerkiTien. The hi^heil
part of the high mouataia of Stauffen in Rheinhard, is called Bartelskopf,
i. e. Bar~-
