INTRODUCTION TO
Circle of the Rhine and the Weßphalian, together with the Loiver Saxon,
the Upper Saxo7i, the Franconian and Sivabian Circles, Alface and LorraWy
in the latter of which alfo are fome lands belonging to the Circle of the
Upper Rime. Concerning its extent we have fpoken of that before, under
the Eledoral Rheniß) Circle.
§. 3. The Circle of the Upper Rhine has, at prefent, the following ftates
belonging to it ; namely, thofe of the biüioprics of Worms and Spire, as
alfo the provoftfliip of JFeiffhibiirg, together with the biflioprics of Strafburg,
Bafel and Fulda, and the commandery of the order of St. John, as
abbey of Prüm, with the provoftihip of Ort'cw/'m« and the
alfo the princely
Eledoral Palatinate of Simmern, Lautern and Veldenz, the Palatinate of
Deuxponts, Heje-Caßl, Heß-Darmßadt, Hersfeld or Hitfehfeld and Spofiheim,
as alfo the margraviates of Nomeny, Sahn with Kirburg, Nafjau-
Weiiburg, 'Naffau-Ufingen, Naffau-Idßein, Nafau-Saarbrucken and Otiveiler,
with thofe of Waldeck, Hanau-Munzenburg, Hanau-Lichtenburg, Solms-
Hohenfolms, Sohns-Braiinfels, Solms-Rodolheim, Sohns-Laubach, ar.d the
Eleäorate of Mentz on account of Konigßein ; that of Stolberg on account
of Konigßein, thofe of Jfenburg-Birßein, Ifenbm-g-Budingen, Wachtersbach
and Meerholz, as alio the Rhinegraves of Greweiler, Griwibach, Dhaun,
Leiningen-Hartenburg, Leitiitigetj-Weßerburg and Gru7ifladt, Munzfelden,
Witgenßein of Witgenßein, Witgejtßein-Berkbiirg, Falkenflein, Reipolzkirchen,
Chriechingen, Wartenberg, Bretzenheim, Dachßuhl and Ollbruck, and the
Imperial cities of Wortns, Spire, Franckfort, Friedberg and Wetzlar, Some
Seigniories alfo lie in this Circle, but thefe are either exempted, or have
neither feat nor voice in it. Heß'e-Caßel and Hanau- Munzenberg have
fometimes feparated from the Circle, and I know not whether, at prefent,
they hold of it again or not. The dukedom of Sa'-jcy is alfo reckoned in it,
but this has feparated itfelf from the Circle. Some difputes relating to the
ranks of the above-mentioned flates of the Circle, are ftill exifting, but
they generally follow each other in the order here recited.
§. 4. The billiop of Worms and the Eleflor palatine of the dutchy of Simmem,
are fummoning Princes of this Circle. Thefe, on account of the
DireBorium, entered into a ftipulation at Weinheim, in the year 1690, to
the following effed; viz. thiit Worms indeed Ihould pofTefs it alone, but yet
communicate with the Eledlor-palatine of i'/wwdT«. In the year 1705, they
ftipulated again,
that Wo?'ms fliould feparately engrofs and expedite the circular
fummons, but both before and after engroffing them, communicate them
to the Eledlor-palatine for perufal and revifion : That the deputies of the
Palatinate of Simmern (hould concur in binding the officers of the Circle,
at the folemn engagement ; and that the deputies of Worms fhould
fubfcribethe heads of bills to be brought in, after the words, Von gefammten
Kreis-AuJfchreib-amts wegen.
