ancient revenues of the latter. About the year 1132 zhhot Eiigelfried, by
the help of falle records, obtained an exemption. This opinion oi Hanßtz,
the princely abbct of St. Emmeram, J. B. Kraufz has warmly combated
in fome writings of his, and on the contrary maintained, that the
cloyfter was far older than the bilhopric. That either Ottilo Duke of Ea-
"jaria, or Tafzilo had removed the epifcopal fee to the cloyfter, but that the
Emperor Charkviagne, after depofing Tafzilo., had removed it again from
thence to the church of St. Peter, and alfo anew reftored thereto its incomes
and eftates ; and that he alfo immediately fubjeded the cloyfter to
the fee of Rotiie. That the biHiops, indeed afterwards, till the time of
St. Wolfgang, retained the dignity of an abbot in the cloyfter, but that the
eftates of the cloyfter were never given up to their management, but always
remained immediately fubjedl to the Kings and Emperors. That after
St. Wolfgang, no bifhop was ever advanced to the dignity of an abbot in the

cloyfter, and that from that time it began to enjoy the fweets of its firft
immediacy on the Empire.
§. 2. In the year 173 1 the Emperor Charles VI. renewed, or rather
confirmed the princely dignity, which the Emperor Albrecht had already
conferred on it. The title of its abbot is, By the Grace of God of the
Holy Roman Empire Prince, and of the Imperial free foundation of the Empre
at St. Emmeram in Ratift)on Abbot. He fits at the Diet of the Empire
on the Rheniß bench of prelates, between the abbot of St. Cornelius
Minßer and the abbefs of Efjen. In the circle of Bavaria he enjoys both
feat and voice on the fpiritual bench between the provoft of Berchotlfgaden
and the abbefs of Lower-Mififter in Ratisbon. In the year 1682 his Imperial
matricular evaluation was fixed at thirty-two florins. To each chamber-term
he contributes eighty-feven rixdollars, eighty-three kruitzers and
a half. The Dukes of Bavaria are patrons and protestors of this abbey,
with refpedt to its eftates in Bavaria, which are alfo the moft confiderable
belonging to it, and likewife its beft.
§. 3. The church of this cloyfter boafts of keeping, even to the middlefinger
of the right-hand the complete body of St. Detiis the Areopagite,
which was ftolen out of the abbey of St. De7iis in France % though the
latter alfo maintains that it is ftill adtually in pofTeflion thereof; notwithftanding
which, as well in the cathedral church at Bamberg, as in the
church of St. Vite in the citadel at Prague, the head of this Saint is fhewn,
and at Munich in the palace-chapel is a hand of him. This church moreover
contains in it other remarkables.
