1372, Ulrich, lord of Hanaiiy received of his patrimonial eftate here the
caftle and town of Babenbaufen., with all their appurtenances, as a fief belonging
to the crown of Bohemia ; and, by the inveftitiire, it was enacted,
that, on the failure of the male-line of Hanau, the daughters and their
proper heirs fhould inherit ; and, on failure of fuch, the neareft relations
and their heirs. The extinction of the houfe of Hanau gave rife to a conteft
l.'ctwixt the houfes of Hejje-Caffel and Heße-Darmßadt, whether the prefecturate
o( Babenbaufen belonged to the county of Hanau- Munzenberg or Hafiau-Lichtenberg
; but in the year 1754 they came to an agreement. The
principal places in it are
Babenhaujen, ox Bobenhaufen, a fmall town, containing a caftle, feated on
the river Gernjprinz. This place was for fome time the refidence of the
founts of Hanau, and had originally a mint j but both thefe were afterwards
removed to Hanau.
Diidenhojcn, a town, two thirds of which belong to the prefe(5luratc and
one third to the counts of Sclxnborn, neverthelefs as a fief of Mentz.
Scbafheiin, a large village, to which, in the year 1368, the Emperor
Charles IV. granted a charter of the fame kind with that of Hanau, but
it has not rifen to be a town. This place, by virtue of the feudal law of
Fulda, is a fief of the Palatinate. On the death of the laft count of Hanau,
He[fe-T)ar7)ißadt took poffeffion of this village, as alfo of Schlierbach
and Dietzenbach.
14. AJJcnheim, a little town, containing a caftle, lies at the conflux of
the Nidda, conftituting the Wetter, formerly a part of the old Munzenberg
eftate. Hanau has half of it, the remainder belonging to Solms-Rodelheim and
Tfenburg-Wachtersbach.
15. The prefedurate of Munzenberg forms alfo a part of the ancient
Munzenberg inheritance; but, in the year 1684, defcended to Hanau
from the Eledtor of Mentz. This prefedturate is an Imperial fief. To
it belongs
Munzenberg, a fmall town, having an old caftle on the Wetter. Three
eighths of it appertain to Hanau ever fince it acquired the EIe£lor of Mentz'%
part in exchange for Konigßein. Of the remainder the houfe of Solms is
proprietor. The ancient family of Munzenberg became extinct in Ulrich II.
about the year 1236 or 125.0 ; when his fifters divided the Munzenberg
lands J
and thus one fixth of them devolved to the houfe of Hanau, Adelbeida,
daughter of Ulrich I. lord of Munzenberg, by his firft wife, being
married to Rei^ibard, lord oi Hanau.
Treyfz, a village, one half of which is a fief of Fulda belonging to Ha^
nau, and the other to Solms-Braufifeh.
