they are to be held alternately within the territories of Cajfel and Darmftadt:
it is alfo very feldom that a general Diet of either of the provinces is fummoned.
The fovereign of both houfes aflemble at pleafure a particular
Diet, and then the Landgrave of iiZt'/^-C-?^'/ fends orders through his vvhok
country for them to appear by deputies. Cajfel is generally the place of
affembly for thole of Heje-Cajfel, though fometimes they meet at Treyfa.
The Diets of Htfc-Dannßadt are invarfably held at Girßn. In both the
fovereign is reprefented by a commilTioner. The hand-Convocatiom-fage^
as they are called, generally relate to free-giftSj and are fummoned by the
marfhal on an order from the fovereign.
§.5. The houfe of Ä'//t'-C^^/ forms one of the Proteftant religion, and
that oi HeJfe-DarmßaJt is Liilkeraii. Of the collateral lines, Rothenburg is
Roman Catholic, and Homburg and Rhilipfdak Proteftants. The iubjeds
likewife vary in their religious profefhons. It being known, in the year
"ij^i^^ that Frederick, the hereditary Prince of He£e-Caffel, had, in 1749,
gone over to the Romiß:) religion ; that Prince, on the twenty-eighth oi October
and thirty-firft of December, voluntarily drew up, and confirmed by
oath, an inftrunient declaring, that his prefent and future children Hiould
be brought up, inftruded and confirmed only in the Proteftant religion ;
and, that on his accefTion to the government no manner of alteration fhould
be made with refpedt to religion as at that time it flood, but that he Ihould
preferve every particular relating to it unmolefled and entire, according to
the ßafiis c.nni norwativi, as fettled at the treatv of WcßphaUa, the prelent
ecclefiaftical eltablilhment in the country of !!''£}, Scbauenbiirg, Hanau.,
and all
other appertaining to his fucctffion and the principles of the Proteftant
body. This inftrument was not only printed and inferted in the eighteenth
volume of the ASla Hißorico-ecclefwßica , but has alfo for its guarantees the
Proteftant Princes of Europe, the States of the Ufiited-Provinces and the
whole Proteftant body. In Heß'e-Caßel are two fuperintendents of the Proteftants,
one at Caßel the other at AllendorJ on the Werra\ and a Lutheran one
at Marburg. Gießm had formerly two fuperintendents, but this office has
fince been divided among the three profeflbrs of divinity, infomuch that
nov/ the diftrid of Ahfeldt has its fuperintendent ziGie£e?i equally with that
of Marburg. Under thefe fuperintendents are infpedlors, and next to them
metropolitans. Thefe are the principal clafTes of the clergy, to whom the
parifh-priefts and fchoolmafters are fubordinate.
To Hcjfc-Caffel belong the univerfities of Marburg, and Rinteln and
Gießen to the houfe of Heße-Darmßadt .
§. 6. Befides the common Latin fchools here, at Caßel, Marburg, Gi^
eßen and Darmftadt are public feminarles. Caffel, Hersjeld and Darmfiadt
