it to IVurzhurg. In the year 1649, it was agreed that the Eledor of
Maitz, as bifliop of IVurzbiirg, Hiould reftore it to Kanau, in confideration
of 5000 florins ; but afterwards, in lieu of that fum, the falt-pits of
Orb were made over to it. Hereupon Count Frederick Caßmir ceded it to
tiie Proteflants, and aflifted them in the converfion of it into a college.

9. The prefedlurate of Brandenstein contains the old ruined caftie of
Bergenßein as a fief of JVurzburg, and alfo four villages of its own 3 but,
in the year lyig, was mortgaged to He//e for 100,000 florins.
10. The prefedturate of Schwarzenfels confifts of the town and
rmnsdca.(i\e of Schwarze/ifels, together with nine villages,
which were mor;-
gaged, in the year 1643, to Heße-Caffel. The road-toll to Sterbfritz is an
Imperial fief,
and one half of the village of Junkersbach belongs to Fulda.
I I. The ioint-prefecturates of Biebhrgrund and Lohrhaupten.
1. That of Biebergrwid confids of eight places, one half of which were
original demefnes, and the other half purchafed, in the year 1684, of the
Elector of Mentz, to whom they are ftill acknowledged as fiefs. The
principal place in it
is
Bieber, a thriving town, containing near it a mine of copper and filver,
as alfo fome works of iron and cobalt, in which the latter mineral is prepared
into a moft beautiful fmalt.
2. The prefecturate of Lohrhaupten confifts of three places, all which
are demefnes ; and near the town of that name lies the fource of the
river
Lohr.
12. The prefecturate of Old-Haszlau, with the places of free jurif-

The free-court prefecturate, feated at the foot of the mountain of Welmitzhcim,
or near Alze?iau, was formerly held in common by the counts
of Hanau and the Elector of Mentz. On the death of the lall count, in
the year 1736, the Elector was for taking the whole into his hands; but
it continued on the former footing till Heffe-Cajjel, by the partition agreed
on in the year 1748, took fole poflefllon of it, as a fecondary fief of Mv//";?,
the parilli of Sofnborn excepted. The Elector of Mentz has alfo referved to
himfelf the ecclefiaftical jurifdiction of this Catholic parifli. The villages of
Ha?iau, in the prefecturate of Old-Haßl, belonging to it, are
Somborn-, the church-village, near which is the manfion-houfe of tragi's ;
Old-Mi
lau, Neufafz, or Neufaje, Ber?ibach and Harbach.
13. The prefecturate of Baben, or Bobenhausen, lies on theoppofite
fide of the Mayne, and belonged formerly to the lords of Munzenburg\
on the extinction of whom, in the thirteenth century, it defcended, to-
