T'/jß abbey of Salmanfweil, or Salmanfvveiler, called alfo Salmonfweil,
and in Latin Salamonis villa and Salemium, lies
betwixt the county of Heiligenberg, the diocefe of Coitanz
and the hnperial town of Ueberlingen. Its ?iewefl part alfo
extends to the Bodmer or Ueberlingen lake.
This abbey belongs to the order of Cißercians, being founded towards
the years 11 34 and 1140, hy Günther, ov Gimtram, baron of Adelreiitery
a nobleman pofiefTed of great riches, and ftill bears the arms of that family,,
which are a ram fible in a field gules. The Emperor Conrad III, is faid to^
have rendered it immediately fubjeifl to the Empire in the year 1142, and
from the Emperor Frederick I. it not only received additional privileges but
alfo a grant of certain lands.
The title of the abbot is, Moft noble prelate and lord of the holy Roman
Empire, and reigning abbot of the royal exempt, and confiftorial free
Imperial foundation and minilter of Salem. He is ufually vicar-general of
