Lutherans founded here on the feventh of OBober, 1607, by the Landgrave
Philip V. and for which, on the nineteenth of May of the fame year,
the Emperor Rodolpb II. granted a charter. This univerfity is poffelTed of
lands and incomes in the towns oi Gießt;n., Gninberg and Alsfeld ; as ahb
at Marbtirg and Kaldem in the territories of Hejfe-Caßl. But the laft of
thefe, Heffe-Cajpl, in the year 1746, notified to the Darmßadt family its
intention of redeeming, for its own univerfity of Marburg, by virtue of
the convention in the year 1648, corroborated by an aä: of Dyet, in
1650 ; and the univerfity of Afflr/^z/r^ having, indue form of law, depofited
42,265 pounds, as the redemption-money, it laid an arreft on the univerfit}'-
lands and incomes belonging toGie/Jeny which were to have been redeemed.
In this town is alfo a clafTical academy and two churches. That Gießen^
fo early as the beginning of the fourteenth century, was a town, appears,
exclufively of other proofs, from an inltrument of Landgrave Otho's, drawn
in the year 1325, granting to the inhabitants of the fuburbs thereof the
fame rights with the townfmen. The fliare which the Palfgraves of Tubingen,
and the lords of Minzenberg had in this town, devolved, on their
extindlion, to the family o( Caßel. In the year 1530, the Landgrave Philip
the Magna/ii/nous caufed the town to be fortified; but, in 1547, it was
difmantled by order of the Emperor. In the year 1560, the works notwithfianding
were repaired, and have fince been enlarged and improved.
Great Linde, a village, having a market, was formerly walled and had a
caftle, which was demoliflied in the year 1248.
Staußenberg, a fmall town, with an old caftle belonging to it, now lying
in ruins.
The bailiwick of Loller, containing four villages.
The bailiwick of Heuchelheim, to which belong five villages.
The bailiwick of Steinbach, confifts of four villages.
Obf Within this prefedlurate lies Schißenberg-houß, with its fi.elds,.
meadows, gardens and woods. It is a commandery belonging to the
Teutotiick order of Heße. To it alfo belongs the manour of JSkuhofy near'
Leygeßern, together with divers revenues at feveral other places.
2. The prefecflurate of Ai.lendorf.
Allendorf, furnamed an der Lumde, was eredled into a town in the year
J 370. This place fuffered extremely by fire in the years 1479, 1603, 1634,
and 1728.
3. The prefedurateof Grunberg.
Gninberg, which (lands on a hill, is of great antiquity having formerly
been a royal 'villa, if not under the Mercvinian Kings at leaft under
thofe of the Carlovinian. In the days of the firft Landgraves oi'Lhuringia
it was a town, which, in the year 1195, was laid in aflies by the troops
oi Mentz. Its decay is owing tO' the fires in 1370 and 1391, thewars, and
particularly that ip the feventeenth century^
