I . In the Upper-Land is
1. The prefedlurate-captainfliip of Bayreuth, to which belongs
I . Bayreuth, or Baretith, the refidence of tlie Marggrave, and the firft
among the fix head towns, as they are called, of this principality, being
the feat likewife of the above-mentioned (§. ii.) high-colleges, as ahb of
the prefedlurate-captainfliip, and the mint-town of the marggravate. It is
environed by three ftreams, namely by the Red-Mayn, tlie Mißelbach,
and the Sendelbach. The princely palace here was burnt down in ij^i,
but rebuilt again in a grand and beautiful tafle. The places of worfliip
belonging to the town are the hiitheran principal church, together with that
of the fpital and the Calviniß church, as alfo the Roman- q.\\\-\cX\z chapel.
In the town too is a fuperintendency. The gyrnnafmm iilujlre here was
founded by the Marggrave Chrißian Erneß'm the year 1664, whence it is
named after him Chrißian-Erneßinum. At Bayreuth alfo is a feminary, and
in the well built fuburbs before Frederick^ gate is an orphan-houfe. The
greateft part of the feigniory of Bayreuth fell, on the death of the laft Duke
oi Meran in 1248, to the Burggrave Frederick II. or III. but a part of it
he became poflelled of in another manner. The prefent refidence town of
Bayreuth was at that time but a very mean place, and of lefs confideration
than the prefent village of Altenßadt Bayreuth, which lies not far from it. In
1430 it was reduced to allies by the Hujites. In 1553, 1605, 1621, and
1624, it fufFered greatly by fire.
2. St. Gorgcn am See, a town, fitnated on the Brandenburg Weyher, lies
about half an hour's diftance from Bayreuth, having been founded in the
beginning of the eighteenth century by the Marggrave George William, and by
the Marggrave Frederick endowed with a proper town-council, and many
