4. Subjed to the general fuperintendant and abbot of Denkendo)-f are
eight fpecial fuperintendants, of whom the fpecial fuperintendant at Goppengen
prefides over twenty-four paridies, the fpecial fuperintendant at Kircbheim
over nineteen, the fuperintendant at Nürtingen over ten, at Nei/ffen over
eight, at Heydenheim over twenty-four, at Urach over tv^enty-five, at Pfidlingefiovex
eleven, and at Bhidnurenovtx twenty-one. The abbey of JDenk(ndorJ\
which gives name to the generalfhip, lies without its limits.
The fynod here, which is held annually in the months of September and
October, is compofed of the conliflory and four general fuperintendants. All
parilhes are filled up by the confiftory, which alio, on a vacancy in the
deanries, abbies, deaconries, ^c. in the three chief towns, as alfo in the
profeflbrfhips in the univerfity and convents, always propofes three perfons,
out of whom the privy-council choofes the candidate who is beft recommended.
The meaneft revenue of a pariOi is four hundred florins.
The revenues of the ancient monafteries have been moftly applied tothe
fervice of churches and fchools, and the perfons officiadng in them,
under the direcftion of the ecclefiaftical council. The fourteen abbots and
priors of Adelberg, yllpirjpach. Anhäufen, Bebenhaitfen, Blanbeuren, Denkendorf,
Herbrechtiiigen,^ Herrenhh, Hirfau, Konigsbronn, Lorch, Mmdbronn,
Murhard and 5. George, not only form, in the manner abovemendoned,
the firft clafs of the ftates of the country, but out of them alfo are
chofen the four committees (§. 5.) and the three ecclefiaftical counfellors of
the confiftory, four of whom, as above fpecified, are perpetual general
fuperintendants and members of the fynod ; four are inverted with the
government of feminarial convents ; as, namely, thofe of Bebenhaufen,
Maidbrmn, Defikeiidorf znA Blaubeiiren ; and thefe lafl: four, together with
the abbots oi Anhaujen, Herbrechtingen, Konigsbrcnn ^nd Murhard, who are
alfo priefts of thofe places,
are obliged to refidence.
§.7. For the inftruclion of youth, particularly in divinity, this dutchy has
feveral excellent foundations, which are not to be met with in other countries
under the direflion of a preceptor and
the common gram mar-fchools here,
one, two or three afliftants, who are termed coUaboratores, or provifires,
amount to above fifty ; and every year thefe fchools are vifited and examined
not only by the magiftracy and clergy of each place, but alfo by a profeffor of
phi'ofophy at 'Tubingen and by the redtor of the gyrnnafiurn at Stuttgardt. By
the former are examined the fchools in the country on the Steig, and by the
latter thofe in the country undertheS/t'/^ (§-3 •) O^^ of thefe fchools they feledt
fuch fcholars as give indication of making good divines, and thefe at \}t\z gyrnnafiurn
of Sutgard fmthxr undergo three other examinations in three fuccefiive
years; after which twenty, formerly twenty-five, are removed from thence, as
thePrince's alumni and ftipendiaries, to the four convents in the countryappropriated
to. academies, which may be looked upon as the higheft clalfes of a
