for which reafon it is no eafy matter to afcertain with any degree of exadtnefs
the proper extent of the electorate, and maps themfelves differ with
refped; to its greatefl: length and breadth. In the repertorium Bavaria its
utmofl: extent from north to fouth is reckoned forty-feven leagues, and
from eaft to weft thirty-three. Bavaria of itfelf is computed to be thirtyfix
leagues in length, and twenty-one broad. The lands of the eledorate
in this circle and that of Snaabia taken together amount to about feven hundred
and twenty-nine geographical
fquare miles.
§. 3. Upper-Bavaria is partly mountainous and woody and partly marfliy,
abounding alfo in large andfmall lakes ; and being likewife pardy level, but
in general fitter for pafturage than tillage. Lower-Bavaria is for the moft
part level and more fruiful.
In general Bavaria abounds in grain, paftures,
fruit, woods and forefts ;
producing alfo great numbers of cattle and plenty
of game and wild-fowl. At Reiche?ihall and T'raunßein are falt-works.
Near Bobenmais, in the diftriä: of Viechtach^ is a mine of copper and filver,
and at Reichenthall one of lead. In certain places in particular in the
diftridl of Weilheim are quarries of very fine marble. At Moching, Abacb^
Adelholzen, JVembditig., R.ofe?jhei?n, and Heilbrunn are medicinal fprings and
baths. The upper palatinate is extremely mountainous, but withal woody,
and has plenty of grafs, being likewife cultivated and producing grain.
This country is able to fupport its inhabitants, particularly by means of the
great number of its iron and lead-mines, its large woods and paftures.
The Danube which iflues out of Sissabia waters the eledorate from weft
to eaft. Below Rain it receives into it the Lech, and near Kclheim the
Altmubl, above Raiisbon alfo the Nab which has its fource both in the
Fichtelberge and the upper palatinate; and below that city the Regen which
rifes in the diftrid of Zzvifel in Lower-Bavaria ; below Deckendorf and
Plading it takes into it the Ifer, which ilfues out o{ Tyrol, near Viljhven the
Vils, and near Innßatt and Pajfau, the /;//;, which alfo rifes in Tyrol, being
joined below Burkhaiifen by the Salza. Out of the Danube, the Inn, and
the Jfer, fome fmall quantities of gold are gathered. The large inland
lakes here are faid to be fixteen in number, and the fmaller ones one hundred
and fixty : Of the former in Upper-Bavaria are the Chcimjee^ the Wo.lchefifee
or Waldenfee, the Tegernfee, the Kochelfee, the Staffelfee, the Wurmfee
or Wirmfee, and the Ammerjee. Thefe rivers, lakes, and ponds abound
in filh, particularly the numerous ponds in the upper palatinate, which
have an uncommon plenty.
§. 4. In all Bavaria are reckoned thirty-five towns, and ninety-five open
and inclofed market-towns. According to the repertorium Bavari^e, in the feveral
bailiwicks are upwards of looo caftles, hof-markte (or eftates inverted
with lower jurifdidion over the vafi"als) and feats, which (hall be mentioned
under each bailiwick. It is alfo faid that in Bavaria are 11704 villages,
hamlets, and deferts, which laft alone are computed at 4000. In the
