middle of the fixteenth century. In this town alio is a collegiate-church,
in which were formerly twelve canons, together with a town-church,
which is pofTefled in common by the Liuheram and Cahinißs, and a LatiJi
fchool. The falt-pits here in conjunction with the neighbouring mines of
iron and fleel, as alfo the forges, bring in confiderable advantages to the
town, which carries on a great trade in iron and fteel wares. The meeting,
which the Proteftant Princes held here in the years 1529, ic'^o,
l53^ ^533' ^535' ^540> ^^^ league which they concluded here' in
1531, and the theological articles drawn up by 'Dr. Luther, which they
caufed to be confirmed by their teachers, have rendered this town of
great note in hiftory.

2. The vogtey o{ Herrenbreitungen. In it Is
Herrenbreitungen, or Burgbreitungen, a borough, featcd on the river
Werra oppofite to Frauenbreitungen, and formerly containing in it a celebrated
monaftery of ^fwc^/V?/«^, which was fecularized in 1553, and is
become a citadel.

3. The vogtey oi Barchfeld, having its feat in the great parochial-village
«f the fame name, which lies on the Werra. At this place is a noble feudal
court belonging to Hejfe.
4. The cent or vogtey of Broterod, to which belong the borough of Bro~
terod, the hijelberg, and Little-Schmalkalden.,
5. The prefedurate of Hallenberg, which formerly belonged in part
to the houfe of Saxotiy, whofe fliare in it was, in the year 1619, received by
Heje in exchange for one half of the cent o^iBenßjaufen. In this prefedurate is
Hallenberg^ a ruinous citadel, feated on a mountain, together with

§. I. A Tolerable view of this couaty is to be had in Vettere chart of
"'^ the principality of Onolzbach. It is for the mod part environed by
the bifhoprlc o{ Bamberg, the county of Caßell,
and the feigniory of Speckfeld;
as alfo by the Underknd of the principality of Bayreuth, the principality
of Onolzbach, and the bifhopric of Wurzburg. This county in its
greateft extent, as it lies contiguous, is four German miles long, but in fome
parts only half a one, though in others
above five quarters of a mile broad.
