552 GERMANY. [Tliurlngia. right, as alfo by virtue of the expedtancy of it which had been obtained in 1 242 of the Emperor Frederick II. Upon this a war enfued, which was at length terminated in 1263 by means of a ftipulation ; by virtue of which theMarggrave Henry oi MeiJJen obtained the landgravate of Thuringia, and Henry of Brabant, Heße. Ever fiivce this time the Marggraves of Mcijfen, who afterwards became Eledlors oi Saxony, have been in poffefTion of the landgravate of TVjwr/^^/t?, which was at one time divided among feparate Hnes, but returned again by the extindlion of the latter to that of Meißen, At length, however, by the divifion of the countries, made between the brothers Erneß and Albert, it fell to the {hare of the former. It continued veiled in his defcendents till the Eledor John Frederick, in 1547 loft all his countries, which together with the eleäioral dignity, were conferred by the Emperor on Duke Maurice of the Albertine line ; but that Prince was obliged to cede certain countries among them which had been partly taken from out of Thiiringia, and partly out of the Ofler-lande, and of which hereafter a more accurate account (hall be given, to the children of 'John Frederick, in heu of the yearly revenue allowed them of 50,000 guldens. §. 5. The Elector of Saxony, it is true, has infifled on a voice on account of the landgravate of Thuringia in the council of the Princes of the Empire, but has always been refufed. The Dukes o^ Saxony of the Erneßine line were the parties who oppofed it, and thefe alledged, that they had hitherto carried their voices fingly on account of the countries of 'Thuringia, for which reafon no general voice could take place on account thereof. Thefchool-amt of P/or/^, in which is Pforte, or Schulpforte, the principal of the three fovereign or provincial fchools of the eledlorate, and lying on the river Saale, about one hour's diftance from Nawnburg. In it formerly was a confiderable monaflery of CißercJans, which Duke Maurice converted in 1 543 into what is at prefent called the Prince's fchool ; in which to this very day one hundred and fifty fcholars are maintained and taught gratis. This place is under immediate vaflalage. The fuperintendency too, which formerly was held here, was abolillied in 1749. Memlebcn, a parochial-village feated on the TJnftrut, in a pleafant and fruitful trad: between Nebra and Wiehe. The BenediEline monaftery which formerly ftood near it was one of the moft celebrated in all Thurifigia, and In it died the Emperors Henry and Otko I. This monaftery was diflblved about the year 1545, at which time it became an eledoral manor, and the kmds were farmed out ; but the ufe thereof applied in 1551 by the Eledor Maurice towards the better maintenance of the Schulpforte, Kofen, a village feated on the Saale, and containing a good falt-work. Together with twenty-three other villages, among which are the churchvillages of Altenburg, Befindorf, Lijdotf, Upper-Mollern, Pojnnitz, Pappel^ Rehhaufen, Spielberg, Tauchivitz, Zockwar, 6cc. 3. The prefedurate of Tautenburg. In it "Taiitefiburg, an ancient citadel feated upon a mountain about one German mile's diftance from Cambiirg, and having a parochial-village and a feigniory annexed to it which belonged to the Schenken, who fliled themfelves from hence the Schefiken of Tautenburg. On their extindion, it came fucceflively into the pofleffion of the family of Werthern, the Dukes of Saxe- Zeitz, and Count Maurice of Saxony, and at length reverted again to the eledoral houfe, fum of twenty florins. which on account thereof pays to each Roman month the Frauenpriefjiitz, anciently called Priefnitz, or more fimply Briefnitz, a market-town, citadel and feigniory, formerly belonging alfo to the Schenken^ and which together with its nunnery, has had the fame fate with the feigniory q{ Tautenburg. At this place is a fuperintendency, under which ftand fifteen mother and filial churches. In 1638 it was entirely burnt down. Niedertrebra, a noble eflate and church-village feated on the Urn, and belonging formerly, together with the preceding places and feigniories, to the Schenken, after which it pafied to the Counts oi Werthern, and from them to Duke Maurice of Saxe-Zeitz, who in 1677 difpofed of it to a member of the family of Erffa, and this laft to one of the family of Bodenhaufen, to which family it ftill belongs.
