mentioned under each circle and prefecturate : but all thefe fpecial charts of
the Saxom hitherto publiihed ftand more or lefs in need of improvement.
There are likewife extant poft-charts of this eledorate. The firft of thefe
was drawn by the upper poft-mafter "Job. Ja. Kafcn, and engraved on
copper by Peter Schenk : the fecond, and by much the beil of them, was
delineated by Zwnerzt the command and expence of the Sovereign, under
the tide of a new eledoral Saxon poft-chart, on two very large liieets, and
publiihed by Peter Schenk in the ufual fize :

at a time when Ziirner had fcarce meafured one tenth part of the elcvfloral
Saxon territories, they are ftill full of faults ; for which reafon a new edition
of them, with improvements, on two large Iheets was ordered to be publiihed
by command of the Sovereign. Homann's, heirs aho, in the year
1752, publiflied a chart of the high-ways throughout the cleclornte of
Saxony, which was delineated, in 1728, by y. C. K. and this chart, in the
Atlas oi Germany, conftitutes the fo'"y-ninth. Laftly, it is moreover tc be
obferved, that this eledorate is the only country in all Germany whofe hi:^hways
are accurately meafured, and the diftances marked upon large and
fmall ftone-pillars, or miliaries; which excellent inftitution,
fo worthy of imitation,
was enaded by royal command in the year 1722. An eledoral
Saxon policy-mile contains 16,000 Drefden * ells, or 293332. Rhineland -yfeet.
§.2. The eledorate con fifts of the dutchy of Saxony, the greateft part
of the marggravate of Meijfen, a part of the Vogtla?id and the northern
half of the landgravate of Thuringia. The Liijntias and the eledoral Saxo?i
fhare in the princely county o{ Henneberg, appertain not to the circle of Upper-
Saxony ; for which reafon they have been already defcribed above. All the
countries which at prefent belong to the eledoral-houfe of Saxo?iy, taken
together, amount to about feven hundred and twenty-nine fquare o-eooraphical
miles, being of equal bignefs with the whole circle of Sicabia, the
eledoral Bavarian countries and the Kingdom oiPriißia put together. But
if the extent of the eledorate only be fought after fo far as it belonas to the
circle ci Upper-Saxony, we are to dedud from the above eltimate the county
of Lujatia, which makes about one hundred and eighty fquare miles,
as alfo the lliare in Henneberg, which amounts only to a few miles, and then
there remain to the eledorate about five hundred and forty-fix geoo-raphical
fquare miles.
§.3. Saxony, taken in general, is one of the befl: countries in all Germany.
It yields, in many trads, a rich increafe of all kinds of "rain
