I. Of the town itfelf.
D SHE IM, a town, feated on ih^ r'wev Aifch, is principally
divided into the inner and outer. The prevailing religion here is
the LiUtheran, and in the town is one parifh-church, together with a hofpital-church,
and a good Latin fchooi. The government of the place is
under the diredion of an upper-judge, and twenty-four counfellors, who
divide themfelves into the inner and outer college. In the former fit
thirteen, but in the latter only twelve perfons. The prefident of each
of them is one of the four burgomafters in office, who every quarter
of a year take their turn in the government. That the town is a
very old place appears from hence, namely, that in a record of the Emperor
Z/fitv5 I. of the year 822 it occurs as 2. villa, and in fome ancient
records is even ftiled 'villa regia. Its oldeft privilege known at prefent was
conferred on it by the Emperor Adolphus in the year 1295. In the fourteenth
century it was mortgaged to the Burggraves o^ Numbers;, but redeemed
itfelf, and thereupon, in 1360, obtained of the Emperor CharleslV.
affurances that it fliould never be mortgaged again, but continue always annexed
to theEmpire, which promifethe Emperor Wenzel alfo confirmed. At
the Diet of the Empire it poilefles the twenty-firfl: feat and voice in the college
of Imperiil cities on the Swabiaji bench, and at that of the circle of
Franconia the third on the bench of Imperial cities. To a Roman month
it pays twenty-nine florins, and to each chaniber-term thirty-fix rlxdollarsj
eight kruitzers. In the fixleenth century the greatell part of the circlediets
of Franconia were held here.
