whofe Ion Etbico rertored this ruinated convent. But JVclpho II. about the
}'ear 1047, removed the Nuns from tlience to the old convent of A'tatnunfier,
lying in the Nordgau, and on the other hand ordered the Benedictine
Monks to Altoyf. In the year 1053, the convent here was burnt
down, upon which Welpho tranflated it to Martimberg, which lies near the
town. JVclpijo II. III. and IV". together with Henry III. Welpho V..
and VI. out of their hereditary county of Altorf endowed it with many
eftates, vaffils, villages, hamlets and tythes. The Emperor Henry III. rook
it into the protection of himfelf and the Empire, and by HmylV. it was
created an immediate State thereof. The Emperor Chtir/es IV. in the year
J 376, not only confirmed thofe adls of favour, but alfo with immunity
from the imports and power of the procurators in Swabia, which lall article,
in the year 1489, was ahb ratified by the Emperor Frederick. The title of
the abbot is Moft noble lord-prelate of the holy Roman Empire, lopd of
the refpecLtable Imperial foundation and abbey of Wei?7garten, abbot alfo of
Hfen, lord of the independent Imperial lordlhip of Blumenegg, Brachen^
zcll -inA Hagnau. In the Diet of the Empire he fits among the prelates
of Sioabia, as in that of the circle alfo among the prelates, and in both bentwi.vt
Salmanfweil and Ochfenhaufen. His contingency in the matricula of
the Empire and circle is one hundred and five florins j to the kammerziele^
or Imperial chamber at Wetzlar, he pays for the abbey one hundred and
thirty-five, ruthlers twenty-three kruitzers, and for the lordlhip of Blumeuegg,
twelve ruthlers, fifteen kruitzers and a half. The pra^fedt of the country
claims a criminal jurifdiä:ion over this abbey ; but that the abbey oppofes
and itfelf appoints jurtitiaries over its vaflals and eflates, and holds alio the
procuratorlhip of y///c/y as a mortgage from the Empire..

eftates of the abbey are as follows
1. BrochenzelU lying on the river Schufz, and furrounded by the prefecturate.
2. Hagnau, feated on the lake of Ueberlifigen and not far from Morsbiirg.
3. The free Imperial lordlhip of 5/«?«^"//^^^, or Blumeneck, lying betwixt
the above defcribed counties of Sonneberg, Pludetiz, Feldkirch and Bregenz
in the Walgau, and having formerly lords of its own to whom it gave title.
From them it defcended to the counts of Wardenberg, then to the counts of
Brandis, and laflly to the counts of »S«/«, who, in the year 1613, fold it to
the abbey of Weingarten for 1 50,000 florins. This lordfhip is under the diredlion
of a prefedt, and contains in it
Blumeneck, a caftle, feated on a mountain.
