8. The prefedlurate or ancient feigniory of Romhild, formerly belono-—
Count Bertbold,
the laft of this line, borrowing a confiderable fum of money of the
Counts of Mansfeld, as a fecurity for it mortgaged to them the whole
feigniory of Romhild. This Count therefore dying without heirs in the
year 1549, the Counts of Mansjeld took polfeffion of the feigniory which
was oppoied by the Princes of Hetineberg of the Scbleuß/igVme. In 1555 the
Counts of Mcinsfeld ceded to the Dukes of Saxe-Weunar the entire fuccefiion
of Romhild, together with the mortgages of Lichtenberg and Bruckenau,
in exchange for the prefedurate of Ouiißeben, and the fum of 50,000
guldens. After the extindlion of the line of Saxe-Romhild in the year
1710, two thirds of this feigniory came to Saxe-Meinungen, and one third
to Saxc-C'hurg-Saalfeld. In it is
Romhild, a town, containing a citadel called the Glucksburg. In Romhild
alfo is a fuperintendency and a Latin fchool. Near the town-church formerly
was a foundation of twelve canons. In the year 1606 this place
was almoft entirely confumed by fire. In 1676, 1714, and 1^22 it fuffered
again, though not in fo great a degree, by the fame dreadful calamity.
On a mountain not far from the town flood the citadel of Hardenberg, of
Hartburg, formerly the refidence of a particular branch of the Henneberg:
line, which afterwards became extind. Duke Henry of Saxony caufed fomepleafure-buildings
to be eredled at this place in the year 1701.
The villages of Hayna, MHz, Hindfeld, Menthaufen, Weßenj'eld, Gleichenbergen,
Lind, Sundheim, Eicba, or by the Eiche, Zeilfeld, and Sulzdorfalfo
belong to this feigniory, together with one half of Schwiggerhaiifai,
the other half of it belonging to the Lords of Bronjart, and the cent orhundred
of Rothbaiife?i and Rapperß^aiifen, the former of which villages
belongs as to the reil to the cloyfter of Bildhaufen, and the other to the
family of the Truchßs. In the co-hereditary village of Trapßadf, the
prefeiiurate of Romhild, the kellery of Ko?iigßofen, the chapter of Wurz"
burg, and the Barons of Fauß are poiTeffed each of a ihare, but the Di^
