7he Princely-Abbey

§. I. 'TpHE abbey of Buchau y in the Imperial town ofthat name, is faid-
-* to have been founded towards the beginning of the tenth century
by a lady named Addhida. The abbefs hereof, who has the fame Uberty of
marrying as the Capitulariam, or Canoncßes, is a Princefs, and ftyled fuch,
of the holy Roman Empire, as alfo abbefs of the Imperial, princely and
fecular free abbey of Buchau and St7-afzberg, and the Capitularians muH: all
be either daughters of counts or barons. In the Diet the abbefs lits and
votes on the bench of the prelates of the Rhine betwixt the abbeffcs oi ElTrn
and Hcrvorden, and likewife on the bench of the counts and lords of
Swabia, on account of the lordfliip of Sirafz-berg ; and in the Diet of the
circle of Swabia, on the bench of Lay-princes btivf\xi Lindau and Then^cti;
but in the fubfcription of the refolutions of the circle of 1.6 l6, fne (lands'
among the prelates after Salmanficcil -, and it is on this that Salmaiifweil
grounds its oppofition to the precedency of Buchau, as is already (liewn under
the article of Li7idau. In the matricula of the Empire this abbey is
afleffed at two horfemen and fix foot, or forty-eight florins ; and to the
chamber at Wetzlar \x. pays forty-eight rixdoliars fifty-four kruitzers.
§. 2. In the year 1376, this abbev was taken by the Emperor CbarlesW ..
under the particular patronage and protection of the Empire, widi an immunity
from all delegated power ; and the bifliop of Coßanz, with the prelate
of Kempten,, are Imperial commiflioners, or adminiftrators of the revenues
thereof'.
§. 3. To the abbey belong
1. The lordfhip of Strajzberg, which lies betwixt the dutchyof /^«r/^/;/-
iergy the upper-county of Hohenberg appertaining to Auftria, as alfo the
county of Voringen. This lordfliip has been the property of the abbey for
many centuries, but, in the year 1345, was conferred as a fief on the
{2imi\y oi Reifchach, and, in 1429, on Hans Schicallern znd his heirs. In
the year 1508, it was conferred on the family of Honburg, and, in 1533,
on that of Weßerßetten. George Diterich oi Weflerßetten dying in the year
1622 without male-ifilie, the fief returned to the abbey, which ever fince
that time has retained it in its own hands ; and on this account had a- Ions
difpute with the Imperial nobility of the quarter of the Hegau, Algau-, and
about the lake o^Coßanx, concerning the colledfions which the noblefle would
have committed to their fidelity ; but the abbey has ever levied them itfelf
