Eledlor Albert. The knights of this order are ftiled Defenders of the immaculate
conception oj the Blejfed Virgin Mary, and muft produce unqueftionable
proofs of the nobility of their anceftry for eight generations in both
lines. The Eledlor is grand-mafter, and its enfign is a crofs enamelled
blue with a S. George in the middle, on the reverfe of which is the name
of the reftorer of the order in a cypher, furmounted with the eledoral-cap,
and at the four angles thefe letters, I. V. P. F. fignifying_/////w imut paJtna
fiorebit, i. e. the righteous ßall flourijh like a pabn-tree. This crols is worn
pendent to a broad fky-blue ribbon with a black and white border. To
this order are appropriated the prefedturates of Abemberg and Altmanßeiuy
. as alfo Aicha, Schwaben, Waßerburg, Eggenfclden, Aerditig, N'umarkty
Stadt am Hof znd Ber?ißein, Riedt and HirJ'chau, whence accordingly they
are always held by knights.
§. 13. In the eledoral-coUege the Eleftor of Bavaria poffeffes only the
fifth feat, but notwithftanding that is the fecond of the lay Eledors ; he is
but has
by virtue of Bavaria not only a member of the college of Princes,
even the firfl: feat and vote in it; the Landgravate of Leuchtenberg alfo furniflies
him with a feat and vote betwixt Savoy and Anhalt ; though with
refpect of the Imperial counties and lordlhips of which he is proprietor, it
is by virtue of Wcigenftein only that he takes place in the college of the
Imperial Counts oi Swabia. The Eleftor of ßrtXJijr/^ is joint fummoning
Prince and diredlor of the circle of Swabia, and in the Diet enjovs fix
votes. Ever fince the year 1521, at which time he was only a fimple Duke,
his ailefTment in the matricida of the Empire has amounted to that of an
Eledor, namely to fixty horfe and two hundred and feventy-feven foot, or
1828 florins; and on this footing it has continued from that time, though
föme few are of opinion that for the upper palatinate and the county of
Chafn, he ought to pay one half of the Eledtor-palatine's afTeflment. His
contributions for his other dominions (hall be fpecified in their places. His

the council of trades, mintage and mines. The whole dutchy of
Bavaria is under the direflion of four prefedturate courts ; two of which
for Lower Bavaria are at Landlhut and Straubing ; and the two belonging
