Buchau ; though alternately with the latter, by virtue of an agreement
entered into in the year 1697, to that purpofe. But both in his own name
and that of the bench of prelates, the precedence of this abbey is difputed in
the Diet of the circle and other public aflemblies by the abbot of Salman-
Jweil. This oppofition, however, is no lefs ftrenuoully oppofed by the
abhefs. The afieflrnent of the abbey, in the mafricuia of the Empire, was
formerly five foot or twenty florins ; but, in the year 1682, an abatement
was made of thirteen florins, infomuch that it is now reduced to feven. To
tlie chamber at Wetzlar it is rated at fifty rixdollars, fixty-four kruitzers.
§. 2. The origin of this abbey is not precifely known, nor has it yet
been made to appear, that in the ninth century there was, on an ifland in
the lake of Coftinvz, on which now ftands the tovv^n and abbey of Lindau^
any convent of that name. The opinion of Conringius, which is efpoufed
by others, carries much more probability with it ; viz. that the abbey here,
towards the beginning of the tenth century, was removed to the ifland from
the convent oiWajferburg, and for the greater fecurity thereof built contiguous
to the town of Lindau. About the beginning of the feventeenth
century, the abbey fignified that it could produce a charter from the Emperor
Leivis, bearing date in the year 866, and containing a grant from
Adelberg, count of Rorhbach, of the whole country of Lindau, with the
Emperor's confirmation of the faid grant to the abbey, together with the
dignity of Prince. But many learned writers, both Catholics and Protefl:-
ants, have demonftrated the falfity of this inftrument.
§. 3. Inflead of a difl:ri(fl, this abbey has only fome diftind farms, moft
of which are fubjeft to the jurifdictien of the Imperial town of Litidan
neither can it lay any impofl: on its own vaflals, they being in that refpedl
fubjedl to other lordlhips. It has, however, feveral houfcs and eftates belonging
to it in the Imperial town of Lindau which pay rent to the abbey,
as lying on its grounds. Every abbefs alfo has a privilege, on her acceffion
to her government of the abbey, of releafing the firft malefador that
is capitally condemned within the jurifdidion of the city. On the other
hand, the abbeffes are to be free of the town, and the council may
caufe the alarm-bell to be rung in the flecple of the abbey. The houfe of
Aujlria is patron of this abbey, in token of which it prefents its adminirtrator
or jufticiary every year with a certain quantity of wine inflead of
protedion-money ; and the wine itfelf is called protedion-wine. In the:
year 172.8, both the abbey and town oi Lindau fuffered greatly by fire.
