and the town itfelf alfo fortified. It is the feat of a fuperintendency, containsin
it two churches, a priory and an orphan-houfe, in which is a church, as alfo
a Latin fchool and manufadtures of cloth, velvet and filk. The fine citadel
of Hortenfels, which ftands without the town, has a feparate church of its
own. "Toj'gau was anciently the head place of a peculiar feigniory, which
paffed in fief from the Eleä:ors of Saxony of the Jljcanian line. In the year
1530, the feventeen T'orgau articles of the Proteftantdodrine were prefented
at this place to the Eleftor fohn ; and, in i 576, the "Jorgau writing was
made here, out of the Swabian Concordat and the Maulbrun Formula ; from
which writing, the year following, the Formula Concordirv was drawn up at
Kloßer- Bergen. In the year 1745, the Pn/^/*-;;« pafled the £/i^^ here; in
1756 they fixed their military direclorium at this place ; and, in 1757, for
th'e fecurity thereof, broke down the ingenious wooden bridge thrown over
the Elbe.
2. Schilda, an open little town, under immediate vaflalage and having
both feat and voice at the Provincial-Diets. This place was ereded into

3. Dom7n!tzlch, a fmall open town, having both feat and voice at the
Land-diets ; but the amt-office is polTefled of the upper and hereditary jurifdidion
over it. Ac this place lilcewife is a commandery of the Teiitonick
order, which belongs to the bailiwick of Saxonv.
4. Btlgern, one of the oldefl towns in al4 Meißen and lying on the li.'cr
Elbe. This place is fmall, but enjoys both feat and voice at the Landdiets
, and the council here is poflcfTed of the upper and hereditary jurifdidion
by way' of form. Beigem belonged formerly to the billiopric of
Würzen.
5. Repitz, or Ropitz, an eledoral ftud of horfes fituated ne^r Torgati.
6. JVeydenhayn, a parochial-village with an eledoral hunting-feat, lying'
on the heath of Torgait.
7. Cunziverda, a fovereign farm.
8. Dorrenteichenbach^ Klitzfchen, Koberßjayn and Rocknitz (a part of the
laft of which belongs to the foundation oi Würzen) together with Roitzfcb^
Strellen and Trielicwitz (the lafl; of which alfo in part belongs to the iov^ndaüon
of Scinceinitz) as MoTroJzin, Welfau znd Wefzuig, all parochial villages
with noble eftates.
XIV. The prefedurate of Oschatz, containing in it thirty-two immediate,
nine mediate vaflals, and ninety-eight villages. In this prefedurate is,
1. OJcbalz, in ancient records ftiltd O/z^T^ Ozzek and Ozzets, a town
under immediate vaffalage, and having both feat and voice at the Provincial
Diets. It lies in a fertile ipot, is the feat of a iuperintendency, whofe fpiritual
jurifdidion is divider into the upper and lower circle, and extends
over four towns, comprizing in it fix churches, forty-one mother-churches
in. the country and ninetee« filials. In this town alfo are three churches ;.
