In Leipzig are computed about tvvent)'^ bookfellers, fifty French and Italian
mercantile and trading people, one hundred and fifty wholefale dealers,
above two hundred and fifty retailers, and many dealers in cloth. The town
itfelf in all probability received its original from the Sorbejiivcfids. Ditbmar,
in his chronicle, fpeaks of it fo early as the year 1015, under the title of a
town. According to the received opinion it belonged to the billiopric of
Merfeburgy till Conrad Marggrave of Meißen brought it in 1 134 by exchange
to himfelf. In 1519 a theological conference was held here between
Dr. Luther and Dr. Eck, and in 163 i another appointed between the Saxon
or Lutheran, and the BrandeJiburg and Heßan, or Cahiniit divines. In i

this town was befieged in vain by the Eledlor 'John Frederick, as aUb in
1637 by Banner the Sijoedißi general. In 163 1 and 1632 it was taken bv
the Itnperialißs, and in 1642 by the Sivedes. In 1745 and 1756 it was garrifoncd
by the Prujians, to whom it was obliged to pay vert conuderable
fums of money by way of contribution. The larks, which are caught in
great n\imbers in the neighbourhood of this town, are much noted.
2. Taiicha, a fmall town under immediate vaflalage, together with a cjtadel
and a nobleman's eftate, ever fince the year 1569 have belonged to the
council oi Leipzig. This town lies on the Barde. In 1750 it loll twentytwo
of its beft houfes by fire. The villages of Grafodorf, Cradefeld, Plofitz
and Portitz, which are incorporated into oae parifh with the church
here, appertain alfo to the council of Leipzig.
3. Rotha, a fmall town, citadel and nobleman's eftate, belonging to the
Barons of Friefi, and containing two churches.
4. Liebertwolkwitz, a fmall town, which in the year 1 752, on the extindlion
of the family of Fu/Ien, came by virtue of a marriage with the heirefs
and daughter of the laft owner, to the Counts oiVizthum. At this place, in
1707, the ftipulation on account of the Silejian religious freedom, which
was concluded at Altranliadt between the Emperor and King CharleslLW.
of Sweden, was fubfcribed by that King and the Imperial plenipotentiary
Count Wratißaiv.

5. Old-Ranüadt, a parochial- village and nobleman's eftate, which with
fome other villages is furrounded by the bifliopric of Mcrfcburg, and formerly
belonged to the Barons of Friefe, but at prefent appertains to the
Cammanjch family. Charles XII. of Sweden in 1706 and 1707 had his headquarters
at this place for almoft a whole year, and concluded here in 1706
and with the Imperial plenipotentiary
Count Wratißaw, in 1 707, the celebrated ftipulation on account of
the religious freedom of the Proteftant inhabitants of the dutchy of Silcßa.
