By the convention of Prague, in the year 1599, the reverfion o? the
dutchy of Wurtemberg was ceded to the houfe of Anflria, who, by virtue of
this ceffion, affumed its title and arms ; but the ducal houfe oi Wurtemberg
maintains that this reverfion became void in the year 1740, by the deceafe
of the Emperor Charles VI.
§. 10. The duke's title is, Duke c/ Wurtemberg ß7/^Teck, Count of Mompelgard.
Lord of Heydenheim and Juftingen. The arms for Wurtemberg
are three flag's horns, diamond, in a field topaz. For T^eck topaz and
diamond lozenges ; for Mompelgard two barbels endorfed with tails
averted, topaz, in a field, ruby; for Ueydenkeim, a Saracen % head with a
kind oi Hujfars cap ruby in a field topaz; for Juftingen faphire a ftafF in
bend with branches on both fides; and, laftly, thelmperialftandard, borne by
the ducal-houfe of Wurtemberg as hereditary ftandard-bearer of the Empire.
§. II. This ftandard of the holy Roman Empire was conferred on the
counts of Wurtemberg in the year 1336. The dukes are alfo grand huntfmeu
of the Empire ; and in allufion to this honor, Duke Ebe7-hard Lewis, in the
year 1702, founded the order of hunting; and, in the year 1719, renewed
and increafed its ftatutes, the reigning: duke of Wurtember q- beine
ahvays grand-mafter thereof. The enfign of the order is a gold crofs in
fliape of that of Malta, enamelled with red ; and at each of the four corners
a golden eagle with a hunting-horn betwixt the middle and lower point of
each part. In the centre is a fmall fhield, on one fide of which is a \V in
relievo with a ducal hat over it; and in the other three golden huntinghorns.
This crofs is worn appendant to a broad watered fcarlet ribbon
pafling from the left fhoulder quite down to the right fide. On the left
bread of the coat is a filver ftar embroidered with the enfign of the order in
the middle, and in a green circle round it the motto of the order Amicitia
•vtrtutifquefcedus. The grand fefiiival is on St. Hubert^ day, which is alio
celebrated with a great hunting-match, at the place where the grand-mafter
at that time happens to be.
§. 12. The hereditary ports of this country were revived on its being
raifed to a dukedom. So early as the year 151 1, at the celebration of the
nuptials of Duke Ulrich, the following great officers afilfted at the folemnity
: -u/z. baron of 72i?/Wi^(f;; as hereditary marfiial, hzvon oi Nippenburg zs
hereditary cup-bearer, the hzxonoi Gutling as hereditary chamberlain, and
the baron of Speten as hereditary fteward. But at that time they had no
fiefs (beneßcia) but thefe were afterwards conferred on them in lieu of the
penfion, excepting that the Speten family are ftill without any, their enfeoffment
not being defcended with the poft of hereditary fteward. The
barons of Wallbrunn are at prefent hereditary cup-bcarcrs ; but by whom
the other hereditary offices are enjoyed I know not.
