H E bifhopric or principality of Fajfau lies betwixt Bavariay
Bohemia, and Außria, being feated on the river Danube. It
takes its name from Pajfau, its capital in which it was founded after the
demolition of Laureacum (now called Ens, p. ^12) by the Huns in the
year 737:
Vivilo, otherwife named ^/w7«j, or Vivalus, who was at that
time archbifliop of Laureacum, flying to Pajfau, where Ottilo Duke of
Bavaria granted him the 'church of St. Stephen. And thus the town became
and rtill continues a bifliop's fee. The prelates of this place in procefs
of time were frequently ftiled by hiftorians either Antißites, Laureacenfes,
or Patavievfes. They were formerly alfo fuffragans to the archbifliops
of Salzburg. But in the year 1728 Bifhop Jojeph Dominicus, Count of
Lamberg, obtained his bifliopric to be declared exempt by Pope BenediSi
XIII. which privilege Pope Clement XII. confirmed in 1732. And accordingly
it is now immediately dependent on the fee of TLotne.
§. 2. The bifliop's title is, J5y the grace of God exempt, Biß^op of
Pallau, and Prince of the holy Roman Empire. The arms of this bifliopric
are pearl, a wolf faillant and ruby.
§.3. In the college of Imperial Princes the Bifliop of Paffau
fits on the
ecclefiaftical bench betwixt the Bifliops of Ratißon and Trent ; but in the
circle of Bavaria is the laft among the prelates, following the bifhop of
Ratisbon and preceding the prior of Berchtolfgaden. His affefTment in the
Imperial matricula is eighteen horfe and leventy-eight foot, or five hundred
and twenty-eight florins. To the chamber at Wetzlar he pays ninety-four
rixdollars, fixty-two kruitzers and a half.
§. 4. The cathedral here confifts in reality of twenty-three perfons,
though two of their places continue vacant. At prefent the office of hereditary
marfhal of this bifhopric is occupied by Prince Lamberg, that of
hcrtditary chamberlain by the Count of Aham and Renhaus, that of hereditary
butler by Count fVeiJenwolf, and that of hereditary fleward by thfe
Baron of Benzenau. §. 5. To
