TN the circle of Swabia lie alfo the following immediate Imperial lands,
*• though without being States of the circle : viz.
OTTOBEUREN,
I . The Abbey of
The Be7iedi£iine abbey oi Ottobeuren, or Ottenbeuren, formerly alfo called
XJttenbeuren and I'tabeuren,
ftands about two hours eaftward from MemmingeHy
being; the fineft convent of that order in all Sii'abia, and indeed a
fuperb building, containing a Iplendid church. It was firft founded in the
year 764, and belonged to the cathedral of Augsbia-g, but is at prefent exempt
from all fubordination, having, in the year 1626, paid that cathedral
the fum of / 00,000 florins ; in confideration of which it renounced all
fupremacy, jurifdidlion and authority, together with the power of impofing
taxes over it -, which agreement was confirmed by the Emperor. The title
of the abbot is that o'i Keignitig prelate and lord of the immediatefree Imperial
Ä^^fy ö/~ Ottobeuren, aSiual counjellor and hereditary chaplain to his Imperial
Majeßy. The convent is immediately under the Empire, and as fuch formerly
ufed to be fummoned to the Imperial Diet ; but this privilege has for
a long time been difcontinued. It is likewife affelTed in the quota of the
circle of Swabia. Near it is a market-town, over which it is pofTefled of
criminal jurifdidlion, as a fief of the Empire, granted to it in the year 152
by Charles V.
About half one hour's diftance below Ottobeuren lies the Be7iedi5line nunnery
oi Kloßerwald, being fubjed: to a priorefs, and in fome meafure dependent
on Ottobeuren.
To the jurifd'iflion of the abbey of Ottobeuren belong the villages of
yiltfried, Attahaufen, Beheim, Benningen, which lies not far from Memmingen,
Frechenried, Gunz, Ha-wangen, Upper and Under-JVellerheim, Sund'
heim on the Under-Gunz, Urigerhaufen, 6cc. It is alfo poflefled of ceitain
lands belonging to the Teutonick order.
