RATISBON.

H E capital of this bifliopric is the Imperial city of Ratisbon.

* Various are the opinions concerning its original; but the moll:
received notion is that it was founded towards the year 739 by St. Bcaiface,
with the confent of Ottilo Duke of Bavaria, and that GauhaJd, or
Garibaldi was its firll Billiop, who had the chapel of St. Stephen for his
cathedral. Afterwards either the.faid Duke OttilOf or his fucceifor Tafzilo II.
removed the billiop's refidence to the convent of St. Emeran, but Charles
the Great, after the depofition of T'afzHo, tranflated it to the church of Sr.
Peter, endowing it anew with lands and revenues. The bilhops of this
city were for a long time alfo abbots of the monaftery of St. Emeran. But
on the contrary, P. Haujitz has maintained the new opinion, namely, that
this bifhopric fo early as the year 697 was founded by St. Rupert prelate
oi PFortns; and thus is of the fame antiquity with the convent of St. Emeran.
That in the latter the bifhops had their firft refidence, and were chofen
alternately from among its Monks and at the fame time were abbots of it.
Alfo that in 798 the bifhop's fee was removed from the convent to the
church of St. Stephen, but the bidiops dill continued abbots of the former,
till at laft St. JVolfgang in the year 977
feparated tiie abbey from the bilhopric,
at which time the lands which had been given to St. Emeran were fo
divided that one part ©f them ftiU belonged to the cathedral, and the other
to the Monks.
§.2. The arms of this bidiopric are ruby a bend pearl. The bifhop
hereof is a Prince of the Empire, and fits on the bench of ecclefiaftical
Princes betwixt the Bifhops of Freyjing and Pajfaii, and on that of the
circle of Bavaria between the fame prelates. In the matricida of the Empire
he is alfelfed at eight horfe and thirty foot, or two hundred and fixteen
florins, and his contingency to the Imoerta! chamber at Wetzlar is feventyfour
rixdoUars,
thirty-three kruitzers and three quarters.
§. 3. The cathedral conlifls of twenty-four perfons : the Count oi Torring
is its hereditary marÜial, the Baron of Stingelheim its hereditary chamberlain,
the Baron of P/t"/.'^« its hereditary cup-bearer, and the Count of
Taufkirchen its
hereditary fteward.
§. 4. The circumference and limits of this diocefe are defcribed in the
cofmographical ^fcounts for the year 174H, p. 60. It comprehends under
it two collegiate churches, twenty-eight abbeys and prelacies, and twentynine
rural deaneries, to which belong 1383 parifhes, chapels of eafe and
