of the foundation were, for the alledged reafons, abfolutely belonging to
tht Leipzig c\rc\t, and not to be feparated therefrom; and confequently
ought, together with the latter, to take precedency in the greater feledlioa
of the States of the Vogtland and NciiPiadt circles : and here at length the
matter refted.
In the narrower feleftion of the nobility this foundation has
the filling up of one place ; and in that of the wider, of filhng up two.
The foundation has its own regency, which confilb of the captain of the
foundation, a chancellor, fix counfellors of the foundation, a fecretary
and fome clerks, and (lands immediately under the privy-council at Drefden.
Thefe, in conjundion with the fuperintendant, form the confiflory of the
foundation, undsr which ftand twenty-one parifli- churches. With refpedl
to other matters, the foundation has its own peculiar amt-man and taxreceiver.
The chapter of Würzen confifts of a provofl:,

I. Würzen is a town under immediate vafialage and lying on the river

Miilda. It belongs to the larger feledion of towns. Würzen itfelf is
but fmall, but the fuburbs here are much bigger, and contain in them alfo
the old citadel and the cathedral-church, together with that of St. Wenzelaus
and thofe of the hofpital, or burying-ground, as alfo a Z,ö//« fchool. The
beer here is reckoned equal to any in Saxony, and exported in great quantities.
We find here alfo many houfes for the dying of cloth ; and leveral
fine bleaching-grounds for linen. Knitting too is much pradifed here. Under
its fuperintendency ftand twenty-one preachers. This town, with its appurtenances,
was in old times a county, which the fecond Mi/man bifliop,
by name Volkrad, purchafed to the bifhopric of Meijfen. The eleventh bifliop
of Meißen, by name ÜZifruv]^, founded, in 1114, a collegiate-church at
Würzen, or the foundation, which is ftill extant here ; which foundation,
in 1 58 1, entered into a capitulation with the Eledlor Augußus ; by
virtue of which the adminiftration of it vvas ceded to him ; but the further
pofleflion of its eftates was referved to the canons. The Eledor John
George 1. brought it at the fame time with the biiLopric oi Meiffcn, namely,
in 1653, wholly to his own houfe; and afterwards enadted, that his
fon, John George II. and his fuccefi"or in the eledlorate, fliould polTefs
hereditarily the bifhopric of MciJJen and the foundation of Würzen. The
canons of the bifliopric of Meißen hold their yearly convention at this place.
In 1704, Würzen fuffered greatly by fire.
