§. i.T N the year 1752, Homann^ heirs publiflied a chart of the bi-

fliopric of JVorms, which in the Atlas of Germany makes the 93d
but has confiderable defedts.
§. 2. It lies on the Rhine, being about five hours, or two miles and a
half long, and for the greateft part environed by the lower Palatinate, but
partly alfo by the upper county of Katzenellnbogeiiy and by the territory of
Mentz.
§. 3. This country is for the mofl: part mountainous and woody, but
boafts alfo fome fruitful arable lands, meadows and wine. It is likewifc
plentifully watered ; for the RJjine, running through it, receives here feveral
fmaller rivers in its courfe.
§. 4. The Protedant churches in this bifliopric retired in the year 1705
from the Electoral Palatinate to the binx^pric of Wo-rnn, and live now in an
oppreffed State. They have no longer any particular church-government
of their own, but yet are not fubjedl in ecclefiaftical and matrimonial matters
to the regency o{ Wornn or catholic officers. The regency nominates
the paftors and fchoolmallers. One of the Proteftant preachers too is infpedtor
of the reft.
§. 5. In ancient times the Vangiones inhabited this diftridl. In the middle
ages it was called IVormejbeld, JVorniatz-feld, or TVcnnfergau. That it was
formerly the feat of an archbilhop has not been proved ; but the bidiopric
belonging to this place is ancient, and one of the bifhops of Worms {Epifeoptis
Vangionurn) named Vibhr, afHfted at a council at Colcgn, in the year
347. Of the ancient bilhops here, however, we have little certainty. The
feries of the Prelates of /Fwwj, which may be moft depended on, begins
with Ereriibcrt, who was appointed bifliop thereof about the year jjo.
