2. The cloyfter-amt of Hcihbrnn. In it is
Heihbrun, or Haihbron, a fmall town, feated on the rivulet of Schwabach,
and taking its name from a medicinal fpring there, which the Marggrave
Charles IFilUam Frederick caufed to be opened a-new and furrounded
with a wall. This place formerly contained in it a cloyfter of Cifiercians^
founded in 1132, but in 1582 this cloyfter was converted by the Marggrave
George Frederick into z gy^nnafnuyi illußre, and the revenues belonging
to it allotted to the ufe of the young ftudents. This gymnafiiim belonged
in common to both the reigning Marggravial houfes ; but was aboliflied in
17-^7, at which time each houfe applied its (liare in it to the ufe of the
gymnafium in their own refidence-towns.

3. The adminiftratory-prefedurate of Merkendorf, which has its

Merkendorf, a fmall town, fold by Engelhard of Wolden, in the year
1368, to the Burggrave Frederick V. In the year 1648 this place was reduced
to adies. Till 1719 it belonged in common to the two marggravial
houfes ;
but in that year came to the houfe of Onolzbach alone.
4. The adminiftratory-prefedurate of Waitzendorf, fituated at
Waitzendorf, which is both a borough and citadel. This place was
alfo pofleffed by the princely houfe of Onolzbach, in common with the
princely houfe of Culmbach, till the year 1719.
XII.' The upper-prefecfturate of Feuchtwang : To it belongs
1. Feuchtwang, a town, feated on the river Sulz, and in which is the
upper-amt, a revenue, and adminiftration-office, as alfo a decanate. Near
the town church here formerly flood a foundation of regular canons. At
this place alfo is a Latin fchool. Feuchtwang was anciently an Imperial
city, but was mortgaged by the Emperor Charles IV. to the Burggraves for
the fum of 50,000 florins, and fully ceded by the Emperor Ruprecht in the
year 1365, on the payment of 20,000 florins more. In 1388 it was reduced
to aflies, and in 1645 taken with difliculty by the Bavarians.
2. The cIoyfl:er-adminiflration-amt of Sulz, which has its feat at
Sulz, a citadel and borough, lying on the river of that name, and formerly
containing a nunnery for ladies.
