obtained from the Emperor the title of Illußrious. His ion Frederick the
Great rebuilt Durlach and the caftle of Karhburg, both which had ibeen
ravaged and de(l;royed by the French ; and hberally encouraged the refugees
of that nation who fled into his country. He was fucceeded by his ion
Charles William, who undertook the rebuilding of a new refidentiary city
cdWcd Karljrnhe, i. e. Charles's Reß ; and on the 17th of June 17 15, on
occalion of laying the foundation-ftone for the palace, inftituted the order of
Fidelity. As he was fucceeded by his fon Frederick, fo was the latter alfo
by his fon Charles Frederick.
§.13. The Marggrave of Baaden-Durlach enjoys two votes in the college
of Princes, viz. one for the lower marggravate of Baaden, the other
for the marggravate of Hochberg ; and votes next to Baaden-Baade?!.
Among the Princes in the diet of the Circle of .S-zc-vf/^/'^, thefe countries likewife
entitle him to two votes. His affeffment in the matricula of the Empire
formerly amounted to twenty horfe and fifty-three foot, or four hundred
and fifty-two florins ; but in the year 1683 it was reduced to three
hundred and two. To the chamber of Wetzlar he pays one hundred and
feventy-four rix-dollars forty-four kruitzers and a half.
§.14. The great colleges here hold their feffions at 'Karknihe, and thefe
from the privy-council, the court of juftice, the ecclefiaftical council, the
matrimonial-court, the chamber of accounts, and the treafury.
§. 15. The reigning family and the country in general profefs Lutheranijm
; but with toleration of Proteftants, Catholics, and Jews.at Karlfruhe:
The former have alfo their meetings at Waljch-Neureuth and Friderichfthal.
The whole country oi Baaden-Durlach contains in it one hundred and
twenty parifbes, which are under the infpeftion of the feven fuperintendants
of Pforzheim, Di^rlach, Karlfruhe, Fmmcndingen, Mülheim, Lörrach
and Schöpfen. The general fuperintendency here has been fupprefTed.
§. ]6. In Keyfzkrs travels the revenue of the Prince is computed at
400,000 florins.
§. 17. His territories are,
I. The lower Marggravate of Baaden, containing

either hill or eminence, and every where fandy, for which reafon it is alfo
called the Hart. It produces neverthelefs corn, hemp, flax, turneps, peafe
and other vegetables j and the villages along the Rhine abound in hay and
breed great numbers of catde, bcfides which they enjoy the conveniency of
good fi(heries in the Rhine. The Hartwald lies in the middle of the diftri(5l
betwixt the rivers Pfitjz and Alb, and reaches from Graben to Muhlburg,
which is four hours in length. To this upper diflriä: belongs Karlfruhe,
2l. regular built town in the Hartwalde, and owing its origin in the
year 17 15 to the .Marggrave Charles, who chofe it for his refidence. The
