The Proteilant confiftory, ereäed by Albert Erneß, the laft Lutheran Prince
of Oetiingev-Oettv:gen, is ftill ruled in common by the prefent Prince of
Otttingen and the count of Oettmgen-Wallerßcin. In the town oi Oettiiigen
is a general fupcrintendency of Lutherans^ which is held alfo in common ;
and lioth there and at Appczbojen, Harburg and T'rccbtelfingcn are fpecial
fuperintendencies of the fame feat belonging to Count Oettingen-Oettingen
witli foity-two pariflies under them.
§.9. The Prince of Ot/z/w^f« has, at his refidentiary-feat at Ot'///;?^^;?, a
chancery-office and a treafury. The reigning count of Oettingen-Walierftein
has alfo a particular council and treafury for Oettingen-Oettwgeri and Oettingen-
Walierftein. The reigning count o( Oettingen-Katzenfiein-Baldern has likewife
a diftinft council of regency; but all the three lines oi Oettingen have
one tuftom-houle and hi"h-fteward in common, which are both accountable
to the chamber of regency. The Imperial tribunal at Oettingen, or
rather that trad called the Riefz, has been long in the pofleffion of the counts
of Oettingen, and this jurifdidion they exercife over all the Princes and
States in the Riefz, and have even looked upon the whole as an included
county, maintaining therein, under the title of a bailiwick, the territorial
jurifdidion over all the States dwelling or poflefTed of lands in it. To produce
one inilance, they allow no jurifdiction to the town of Nordlingen
without its v/alls ; but that has occaiioned feveral violent contefts and expenfive
proceffes.
Of the county belonging to the princely houfe of Oettingen in
particular.
It confifts of the following diftricts
I. The Upper-amt, or prefecturate of Oettingen, together with the
diftrict of Schneidheim. The line oi Oettingen-Spielberg, by virtue of a
compact made in 1739 with the line of the counts of Oettifigen-Wallerßein,
has to its former fliare in this prefedurate, to which chiefly belongs
one half of the town of Oettingen, added alfo the fhare formerly belonging
to the Princes of Oettingen-Oettingen. This prefedurate conftitutes a
part of what is called the Riefz (m Latin the Rhicefa) of which particular
trad of land Hotnann^ heirs, in the year 1738, publifhed a particular map,
which makes the eighty-fixth in the Atlas q£ Germany.
