to the two upper ones, as namely thofe of Bebenhaufen and Maulbronn, and
then from thence to the univerfity at Tubingen on the theological exhibitions,
which is done in the following order ; iv's. one year on the admittance of
new alumni from thc^grammar-fchools into the convent of Bhnibeiiren, the
fcholars of that convent are removed to Bebenhuufcn, whence another
fet of ftudents are promoted to the Prince's ßipendiwn for divines ztTubitio-en.
The fucceeding year the promifing fcholars in the country fchools are fent to
the convent of Z)^;7/^ra^i>r/j whence, for further improvement, they are removed
to Alaiilbronn, and after their term, which is ufually two years in
each convent, they are promoted to the Prince's itipend. In thefe four convents
the alumni are provided with lodging, food, apparel and inftrudlion ;
but at their admittance, in conjundion with their parents and guardians, bind
themfelves, in cafe of elopement from the convent, apoftacy from the Z,/^tberan
religion, or other fcandalous crimes, to pay at the rate of fifty florins
a year for the time of their board ; as alfo to devote themfelves to divinity
; and not to folicit, or accept, of any office out of the country without
the Prince's exprefs leave ; but, on the contrary, willingly to take upon
themfelves any fcholallic or ecclefiaftical fundlion, either within or without
the country to which the States Ihall appoint them. The Prince's theological
ftipend, at Tubingen, is a feminary containing about three hundred
ftudents, and fometimes more, who, after ftudying philofophy two years,
are capable of being created mafters of arts, and having ftudied divinity the
two fucceeding ones, whether they have taken the degree or not, if they pafs
the very ftridt examination in the confiftory, have a licence given them under
the title of Examined mafters to preach, baptize and adminifter the facrament.
The moft eminent among them are alfo appointed repetentes in the
ftipend. Till they are provided with a benefice they continue in the feminary,
where, befides their food, every quarter of a year they receive one
florin, thirty kruitzers and two quires of paper ; but the magiftri repetentes
have a more liberal allowance. The fuperintendants of this ftipend are the
chancellor of the univerfity, two profefTors of divinity, both of whom muft
live in the convent and the magißer dotnüs. From thefe foundations this
dutchy derives a conftant fupply of fuch able and exeoiplary divines as, in
proportion to its .extent, are fcarce to be equalled in any Proteftant country
whatever. Stuttgardt has alfo ^ gymnafium illußre, and at Tubingen, exclufive
of its collegium illujlre, is a celebrated univerfity.
§.8. This country is likewife not without feveral confiderable manufactures
; as, namely, that of potter's-ware at Heydenheim and the porcelain
manufactory at Calw ; but this does not flourifh fo much as might have
been expefted from the many advantageous privileges granted for its encouragement.
At Spiegelberg, not far from Marpach and Backnang, is a
glafs-houfe, the mirrors of which, and its other works, are very juftly admired.
