§. 6. With- refpeel to religion this Circle is reckoned among the mixed
ones. At prefent it nominates to the Imperial chamber two afTeirors, one of
whom is Catholic the other Lutheran. When a Catholic afleiTor dies, his death
is certified by the Imperial chamber to the bhhop o{ CoJ':a?iz, who acquaints
the Catholic States with it, who either unanimoufly or by a majority of votes
eledoneof the perfons propofed to them by the bifliop, or refer the nosiination
to him; and the birtiop, afterwards, in either cafe, prefents the perfon
to the Imperial chamber. But when a Lutheran aflefibr dies, the Imperial
chamber notifies it to the duke oi JVurtember g, who thereupon further
certifies it to the Margrave of Baaden-Durlach and the city of Ulm, by a
writ from the Imperial chamber, upon which, in conjundtion with the
other Proteftant States and members, they hold a meeting for the nomination
of another perfon, who upon that is propofed to the duke of Wurtemberg
; and the latter again not only prefents to the Imperial chamber the
perfons thus nominated by this body of Proteftant States, but alfo when h«
cannot concur with their nomination, may, as fummoning Prince of th-e
Circle, prefent another, or when he approves the perfons nominated to fill
this dignity, prefents them, both in his own name and that of the Proteftant
States to the Imperial chamber, leaving the choice to thofe who are the heft
judges of their abilities.
§. 7. Under the Emperor Frederick III. the Circle of Swahia was, for
the fake of the peace of Germany, divided into four quarters, which divifion
ftill continues, and on many occafions has been found to be beneficial. The
head of the firft is the duke oi Wurtemberg, of the fecond the Margrave of
Baaden, of the third the bifliop of Coftanz and the abbot of Kempten^ and
of the fourth the bifliop of Augsburg.

§, I. np HE lands and eftates of the bifhopric of Coftanz or Coßnitz, be-

longing to the Empire oi Germany, lie in Upper-Siaabia on both fides
of the Bodenjees, or lake of Coftanz.
In the year 17 17, the bifhopric employed
three eftates of the Circle of Swabia to examine into the ftate of its lands
and inhabitants, and thofe of the ahhty oi Reiche}!au lying within the territory
of the Empire, and to form a table of them. According to this examination
this Circle has within the Empire, two cities, feven villages, twentytwo
hamlets, nineteen manors, 1632 vaflals, who are for the moft part
only vine-dreflers and day-labourers, 1458 houfes, 2562 vines, 9160
