QCOK'Dl'^Gio'DT.Haubers, the firftmap of the dutchy of^z^r-
*^ icmberg was cut in wood in the year 1559, being about the bignefs
of a common fheet of paper, and printed for the widow of Ulrich Morhards.
In the year 1578 it was reprinted by George Gruppenbach, and inferted by
Adam Ortclius in the firfl; edition of his Theatruni orbis terrarum. But in the
fecond edition of this work, inflead of it he added a map of George Gad-
77er, though without his privity. Gadner improved this map, and at laft
publiflied it in the year 1596; which, in the year 1659, underwent another
impreflion ftill more correcft, by Rofzlin -,
yet
from this De Per, in the year
1694, drew a very faulty one, which JValther rendered ftill more incorredl
by his engraving. Gadner % map was hkewife the ground-work of that of
Mercator, which Hond, "Janffonius, WaesbergzT^ABlaeww re-publifhed under
their refpedtive names. Hülfe reduced it to a fmaller fcale, which Matthew
Merian inferted in Zeiller 's, Topographia Suevice. Schickard's new draught
of it is now no longer in being, and Fischer's, Valk's, and Dankert's maps
are incorred. After all, the lateft and beft map of this dutchy is that defigned
hy John Maier, and engraved, in the year 1710, by Homann, on
two leaves; which makes, \n\\\'i Atlas oi Germany, the eighty-third. But
as this alfo is not free from errors, it is to be wiflied that it were again publiflied
with Mr. Haiibers important amendments.
§. 2. This dukedom confifts of a great number of counties and lord/hips,
fome of which were purchafed, fome devolved to it by marriage, and others
were acquired by conqueft. To the north it terminates on the bifliopric of
Spire, the Palatinate, the Kreichgau, the county of Hohenlohe, and the diftridl
of the Imperial town of Hall in Swabia ; eaftward it is bounded by the
county of L/w/z//-^, the diftrifts of the Imperial towns of G/«?W and t//w,
and the lordfliips of Rechberg and Wicfenfteig ; and with refpedt to the lordfliip
of Hcydenhcim by the priory of Ellwongen ; the county of Oettengen and
a fmall traft of the dutchy of Pfalz-Neuburg; fouth-eaft by the Anjirian dominions
; and to the fouth alfo by the dependencies of the fame province,
the territories of Purßenberg, 'Zivifalten. Zoller, Rothweil and other lefler
diftriös, as alfo by the Brijgau ; weftward it confines on the diftrift of Furfhnberg,
Oberkirch and Oppenaii, two manors lying on the diocefe of Strafzbnrg,
and the marquifates of Baade7i-Baaden and Baade7i-Doiir!ach, from
which countries it is feparated by the Schwarzwald, or Black-fcreß. Its extent
