^^3 G E R M A N r. [Onolzbach, conjunöion wltli the princely cabinet of medals, conveyed in trufi: to his houfe. The princely chancery and regency chamber here are fixed in the old buildings belonging to the foundation of St. Gumbrecht which have been repaired. This foundation was ereded by one Gumbrecht in the fecond half of the eighth century as a Benedioiine monaftery, but in the middle of the eleventh century was converted into a foundation of canons, and in 1563 fecularized. It has its own foundationary amt-office. The Imperial prefidical court-houfe here, together with the council-houfe, the town or St. Johns church, in which is to be feen the new burying-vault of the Princes, as alfo the new building of the gymnafium illußre Carolinum which was opened in 1737, the corredlionhoufe ereded in 1727, and the Jews fchool, are all to be feen in what is properly called the town. Without it v/e find the porcelain manufadlory ereiSed in 17 10, together with the caferns for the foot, which are built between it and the citadel fuburbs. In the latter flands alfo the large feigniorial brew-houfe, together with what is called the Prince's garden, and pleafure-houfe. Behind the well laid out Jager-Jlrect lies the beautiful large court-garden here, with the coftly green-houfe and orangery. The New-Aiilage is a new fuburb 1) ng on the fouth-fide of the town. In the Herried-Suburb is the church-yard of the Holy Crofs, and in the Upper- Suburb the fpital, together v/ith the orphan-houfe and the widow-houfe. The town owes its foundation to the above-mentioned building. In 113g there had long been a pariHi-church at Ansbach ; and in a record of 1259, this place is ftiled Civitas. The Burggave Frederick IV. purchafed the town, together with the decayed caftle of Doniberg in the year 1331, ©f the Counts of Oettingen, to whom it came by inheritance, on the extindtion of the family of Domberg, for 23,000 pound weight of hellers.' In 1634 it was garrifoned by Imperial foldiers, and at the fame time the whole principality, together with the adjoining countries, fequeftered, and an Imperial temporary adminiftration eftablifhed, but tliis continued only for one year. Onolzbach has been frequently damaged by fire, particularly in 1719. 2. The vogt-amt of Veßenberg and Bruckberg, in which is Veflenberg^ a borough. Bruckierg, a princely pleafure-palace, feated in a fine fpot on an emitience, behind which is a mountain, from whence we have a delightful profpedt. The Marggrave JVilliafn Frederick purchafed this place of Jul. Dieterich 'Theodore of Crailßêim-, and caufed it to be built and ornamented in a fine tallie. Under-Biberf, a parochial-village. 3. The vogt-amt of IVeidatbachy in which is Weidenbach, a parochial-village. Trierfdorf, a coniiderable princely farm, having a pleafure-caftle and park. II. The upper-prefedlurate of Schvvabach. In it I. Swabach, one of the head-towns of this principality, and a principal mint-town of the circle of Franconia, as alfo the feat of the upper-amt, which takes its name from it, and likewife of a decanate, lying in a very fruitful fpot on a river of that name, in a rugged and mountainous bottom, and being indeed not large but very populous. Exclufive of the Lutheran parifn-church here, as alfo of a hofpital with a church in it, and the Latin fchool, in this town likewife is a French Calvinifi church, and a "Jews fchool. In the market-place here is a fine fountain adorned with cafcades znd Jet d' Eaus. The mint, which was eredled in 1733 and 1754, is very commodioufly laid out. The new fuburb before the ZoHner gate is built in a very regular manner. Formerly there was a ktter-foundery here, in which the Schwabach letters, which were invented at and denominated from this place, were caft. Exclulive of the common handicraft trades, here are alfo pencil-makers, and artificers in gold and filver-kce j as likewife gold, filver, Leon or Spaniß: fleel, and iron wire-drawers j together with brafs-turners, who make lleeve-buttons, model-cutters, needlemakers, whofe work is held in great repute far and near, and who make above thirty different forts of needles ; artificers in brafs, who among other things make fine metal flioe-buckles ; ftocking-weavers, of whom there are two hundred mafters in this town, who employ about three hundred looms j tobacco-fpinners, tapiftry-weavers, who make fine tapiftry, and divers of whom have removed to Viemia, Berlin, DreJden, Stuttgardt, and other places, and there fet up the like manufadlures ; cloth and fiiuff-makers, cloth-fhearers and preparers. In this town alfo is prepared an exceeding fine and beautiful meal, which is exported far and near. Sclywabach belonged anciently to the Dukes of Schii'abach, and was made a donation of in 1 133 to the cloyfter of Eberach, by Duke Frederick I. who arrived afterwards to be Emperor ; which cloyfter difpofed of this place in 1281 to King Rudolph I. -From this lad it defcended to the Counts of Najfau, who fold it to the Burggrave of Nürnberg, which fale by fome has been afcribed to the Emperor Adolphin of Naff'au. But there is a letter of purchafe extant, by which the firft, Burggrave Frederick V. purchafed the markt of Schwabach at the fame time with the forts of Kammerßein and Komburg, namely in 1364, in which very year alfo he was invelled with thofe places by the Emperor Charles IV.
