NEUS'TADT,
npHIS circle terminates on a part of the circle of the Erzgebirge
as alfo

on the principalities of yf/'677/wrg- and Saalfeld, and the feigniories of
the Counts of Reufz; and comprizes in it the old Gaus or Pagi of Orla
and JVeyda. In it are feven boroughs, together with two market-towns,
and two hundred and twenty-nine (or according to HempePs tables two
hundred and twenty-two) villages, as alfo feventy-five immediate, and
twenty-two mediate vaflals. It is divided into three prefedurates, which
in conjundlion with the amt of Sachfenlmrg, conftituted the four affured
amis, as they are called, which Johfi Frederick II. Duke of Saxe-Gotha was
firft obliged to mortgage in 1567 to the Eledor Aiigußus, by way of fecurity
for the cofts laid out on the latter in the execution of the ban of the
Empire againft him; but afterwards in 1660 he conferred them on Duke
Maurice of Saxe-Zeitz, at which time they were alfo ceded in property by
the Emeßine line of the houfe of Saxony to the eleftoral houfe. On the
extindion of the line of Zeitz thefe prefedlurates came again to the electoral
houfe ;
and they ftill enjoy to this vtry day a feparale Imperial matricular
evaluation (fee p. 536.
I. The prefedurate of Arnshaug with Triptitz, contains in it thirtynine
immediate, eleven mediate vaflals, and one hundred and one villages.
This prefedurate is no part of the Vogtland. In it is
1. Ar?if:aiig, or Arnßmugk, an old citadel, feated on an eminence, and
containing a chapel. The former Counts of Arnjhaugk, have only been in
poffelTion of the upper part of the Gaii of Orla. Count Otto, the laft of
this houfe, died in the beginning of the fourteenth century, and the
Marggrave Albert of Meißen married his widow Adelheid; and his fon the
MTirg^^TTivc Frederick ivith the. bitten Cheek her daughter, that is to fay, his
ftep-mother's, and thereby brought the county of Arnß:>aug to his houfe.
2. Neujladt en the Orla, the head town of this circle, being under immediate
vaffalage, and belonging to the wider feledion of towns. In it is
a citadel, which Duke Frederick Henry of Saxe-Zeitz built and inhabited',
as alfo two churches, and a fuperintendency, whofe fpiritual jurifdidon is
divided into the upper and lower circle, and contains in it five borouo^hs,
together with one market-town, thirty-one mother churches in the country,
and forty-feven filials. At this place is alfo a mine-office for the circle o£
Neudadt.
