The upper county oiKatzetiellnbogcfi, together with part of the lordfliip
of Epftein.
The upper county of Katzenellnbogen borders on the Rhine, the Mayn,
the Palatinate and Mentz, as alfo on the counties of Tfenburg and Erbacb.
In it Hes a part of the mountainous road of Odenivald, and Bannforjt at
Dreyeicb, p. 89. With refpeä: to the latter, it is to be obferved that the
counts of Kafzenellnbogen, fo early as the year 1265, had claimed the privilege
of hunting in the imperial foreft of Dreyeich, but on an arbitration it
was given againft them in favour of the houfe of Fa/h'nftein, and thus it
continued till the i6th century, when the upper county of KafzeneUnhogen
devolving to the houfe of H'jft-, and the prefedlurate of Keljterbach
being likewife fold to it in the year 1642, the count of Yfenburg receded
from the privilege of hunting in the ttrniontz of HeJJe-Dannficidt, but retained
the fees which in this upper county of Katxenelhibogen had ever been
levied by the lords of the hunting-lands of Dreyeichen, and are llill paid by
fuch places belonging to Hejfe-Darmftadt as lie within the hunting precinfts,
and even by the town of Darmftadt itfelf.
This county abounds in corn, wine, almonds and cheftnuts ; how it fell
to the houfe of Hejfe has been fliewn above. It includes

In the firft
cantred lies,
Dar-mjtadt^ a town feated on a river of the fame name, in a fruitful and
pleafant country. This place was not only chofen for the refidence of the
former counts of Katzenellnbogen, but alfo by George I. Landgrave of Heffe^
and his lucceffbrs ; and gives name to the branch of the Heffian houfe, to
whom it belongs. The landgrave George I. ereclcd a new palace here, which
was enlarged by the Landgrave George II. in 1629, and other additions and
repairs made to it in the year 1664 by the Landgrave Leivis VI. Landgrave
Erne/i Lewis began a very ftately palace here, but this has not yet been
completed. In the town is a regency, a court of appeals, a confiftory, a criminal
court, and a grammar-fchool. It contains alfo a church, which is
the burial-place of the princely family. In the year 1330, WilHafn IV.
count of Katzenellnbogen, by permiffion of the Emperor Lfw/'^ of 5(7^^^/^,
fortified Darmftadt with a wall ; and the Landgraves Le-wis V. and VI.
added new fuburbs to it, near which is alfo an orphan-houfe.

Eberffaff, a large village feated on the Bergf'trajze.
