StoUboffen, a little town lying not far from the Rhi)ie. At the beginning
of the war for the Spanjßj fucceffion, a line was thrown up from thence
caftward to the Black-foreß and up the Rljine towards Pbilipßurg, which
the Frencb attacking in 1703, were repulfed with great {laughter.
Scbwarzacb, an abbey of BencdiBines, fituate betwixt Stollboffen and
LLbtenau. To this abbey belongs a manor containing in it eleven villages
befides the market-town of Schivarzacb. The fovereign thereof is the
Prince of Banden.

fituate in Lower-Alface, and containing
Beinbeim, a little town which formerly belonged to the lords of FleekenjUin.

II. The diftrid of Kehl. In it
Kebl, a village feated oppofite to the city of Strasburg, and one half of
it belonging to a religious foundation in Strasburg for the fupport of the
ftrudture of the grand cathedral there ;
but the management of it is lodged
in the magiftracy. Of the other half one quarter belongs to Banden-Baaden,
and the other to the lords of Bocket. Within its jurifdidion ftands
the ruinated
Imperial fortrefs of Kebl, which was built on the following occafion.
Formerly, when Strasburg was an Imperial city, its bridge was defended
by forts on both fides the river. In the year 1678, the French laid fiege to
that on this fide the Rhine, and which from the village of Kebl was called
Fort Kebl. Having taken it by ftorm, they razed it. Hereupon the village
o( Kebl was removed, and a fort built at the conflux of the Kinzig into the
Rhine which is ftill called Kebl. At the peace of Reyfwick, in the year
1697, this fort being ceded to the Emperor and the Empire, it was declared
an Imperial fortrefs. But the ground belonging to it the Emperor
conferred as a fief on the houfe of Baaden-Baaden, referving ftill the
right of placing a garrifon in it to the Empire. In the year 1733 it was
taken by the Frencb. On the firft oi OSlober 1754, on account of its ruinous
condition, the Circle of Swabia with-drew a body of troops which were
quartered there, on which the Marggrave of Baaden-Baaden caufed the
garrifon to be replaced by his circular contingency ; and referred to the Empire
what meafures it would take with regard to the right of garrifoning,
which had been referved to it..
