Le Bronze ancien 181 Dans la deuxième phase - bien que la céramique suive, pour une grande part, les modèles anciens en les réadaptant avec des lignes plus dynamiques -, on remarque une tendance au rajeunissement : des formes nouvelles se développent sous l’influence de types qu’on choisit dans les régions périphériques. Si la saucière », avec son bec verseur proéminent et son pied, est une invention helladique, ce qui n’est pas sûr du tout, l’adaptation de cet ustensile par les Cyclades lui a donné un caractère et une expression propres. Le vernis le recouvrait rarement complètement ; des zones, ou même toute la surface, étaient décorées de motifs géométriques dark on fight ; dans un cas on a réuni trois de ces ustensiles sur une base commune de façon à former une sorte de ker- nos. Les kernoi sont d’ailleurs nés de l’association de récipients, comme en Crète. <strong>La</strong> a veilleuse », le gobelet, l’écuelle, le skyphos, la coupe, la pyxide globulaire ou globulaire aplatie mais rarement cylindrique, ont pris une allure beaucoup plus dynamique et sont décorés d’une incision fine et serrée qui commence à utiliser des motifs curvilignes, surtout des demi-cercles alternés. I1 est clair que le développement de la métallurgie a influencé les formes des vases de terre cuite. Certaines proviennent de la région de Troie - comme le gobelet à deux anses en arche, le (( dépas amphikypellon D de Schliemann - et de Crète - la cruche. Mais la forme la plus caractéristique, et en même temps la plus étrange, est la (( poêle à frire )) qui s’est développée en un disque encerclé de parois cylindriques un peu obliques, avec une anse en fourche ; les prin- cipaux ateliers qui créèrent et firent évoluer ce type se trouvaient à Syros ; c’est sur les (( poêles à frire H de cette île que nous trouvons également la décoration la plus intéressante : des réseaux de spires liées les unes aux autres - ou de spires estampées - avec des motifs au centre - souvent une étoile avec beaucoup de rayons triangulaires - et, vers l’anse, le triangle pubien ; dans de rares cas, à l’intérieur du réseau de spires, étaient figurés de longs bateaux à plusieurs rames. <strong>La</strong> destination de ces ustensiles demeure inconnue, mais elle n’était de tou- tes façons pas culinaire ; peut-être faut-il la mettre en rapport avec le rituel religieux. En général, les ustensiles sont enfumés, soigneusement vernis et polis. Dans la décoration les cercles concentriques remplacent souvent les spires estampées. Autre forme nouvelle, I’askos globulaire aplati dont l’embouchure est en forme de bec d’oiseau et l’anse en arche au-dessus, souvent décoré d’incisions ou d’impressions. De rares ustensiles à décoration incisée prennent la forme de quadrupèdes. L’existence d’ateliers locaux dans les différentes îles explique le grand nombre de variantes.
