ABSTRACT<br />

Many amphibian <strong>and</strong> reptile populations are presently in decline. As environmental<br />

contaminants have been implicated as a possible cause <strong>of</strong> some declines, there has been a great<br />

deal <strong>of</strong> interest in reptile <strong>and</strong> amphibian ecotoxicology. Data resulting from earlier published<br />

research on the effects <strong>of</strong> environmental contaminants on amphibians were tabulated <strong>and</strong><br />

assessed in a Canadian Wildlife Service report published in 1989 (Harfenist A., T. Power, K.L.<br />

Clark <strong>and</strong> D.B. Peakall. 1989. A Review <strong>and</strong> Evaluation <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Amphibian</strong> Toxicological<br />

<strong>Literature</strong>. Technical Report Series No. 61. Canadian Wildlife Service, Headquarters). In the<br />

present document we attempt to bring this earlier report up to date by adding data from the<br />

more recent literature on amphibian ecotoxicology, <strong>and</strong> at the same time exp<strong>and</strong> it by adding<br />

data on the effects <strong>of</strong> environmental contaminants on reptiles.<br />

As the project progressed, it became clear that making the information in the database<br />

electronically searchable might be beneficial to users <strong>of</strong> the database. Therefore, a graphical<br />

user interface (GUI) was added to the database to allow the user to perform custom searches<br />

<strong>and</strong> generate reports. The database can be searched in a number <strong>of</strong> ways, for instance, by<br />

contaminant group, common name, trade name or CAS number; by species, genus, or higher<br />

taxonomic group; by author; or by certain toxicological effects categories. Combined searches<br />

are also possible. The database <strong>and</strong> GUI will be available to be downloaded from a CWS<br />

website; please contact the authors for details.<br />

The <strong>RATL</strong> (<strong>Reptile</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Amphibian</strong> <strong>Toxicology</strong> <strong>Literature</strong>) database contains data<br />

extracted from the primary literature for amphibian <strong>and</strong> reptile ecotoxicology studies published<br />

up to <strong>and</strong> including 1997; there are some data from studies published in 1998 <strong>and</strong> 1999. As <strong>of</strong><br />

September, 2000, there was approximately 2000 references in the database. Citations were<br />

gathered through searches <strong>of</strong> various literature databases, but these searches concentrated on<br />

the environmental pollution literature with the result that our bibliography cannot be considered<br />

exhaustive. Thus the authors would be happy to hear about (even happier to receive copies <strong>of</strong>)<br />

publications <strong>and</strong> grey literature reports not included in our reference list. The user should also be<br />

aware that certain fields <strong>of</strong> research (e.g. effects <strong>of</strong> administration <strong>of</strong> pharmaceuticals or<br />

hormones) may not be well covered in the database.<br />

The information in this report has been organized into eight main tables categorized by<br />

the type <strong>of</strong> study which generated the data: 1) laboratory studies (except traditional acute<br />

toxicity studies), 2) field studies, 3) tissue residue studies, 4) acute toxicity studies, 5) studies<br />

examining the effect <strong>of</strong> pH changes, 6) FETAX (Frog Embryo Teratogenicity Assay -<br />

Xenopus) studies, 7) contaminant review papers, <strong>and</strong> 8) general publications dealing with<br />

amphibian <strong>and</strong> reptile population declines. While these tables provide summaries <strong>of</strong> the data, the<br />

purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>RATL</strong> is to provide the user with the appropriate references to the primary<br />

amphibian <strong>and</strong> reptile ecotoxicology literature. In other words, because the data in <strong>RATL</strong> have<br />
